I had a successful ileostomy nearly 5 years ago. Just recently I've started to pass a small amount of feaces in the normal way through my rectum.  It  is only a small amount maybe an inch or so long. It is very dark greeny/brown in colour and has a offensive smell. It's definately not mucas.  It is usually just once, first thing in the morning after sleeping and does continue on during the day.. Is this normal after 5 years??

Hey Robert, welcome to the forum.

Do you have an end or loop ileostomy? I've heard that it's common for loop ileostomies to have stool pass long after surgery.

if you have an end ileostomy and are passing something out of your rectum, it would not be stool, but likely a combination of mucus/blood.

Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate.

@veganostomy Thank you very much for your reply I appreciate it. I believe it is a loop although Ive never asked. What shocked me was, no trouble like this at all for over 4 1/2 years and suddenly this started out of the blue one morning. If it's a common thing that happens I should not worry. I just hope it stops without needing any intravention. Ive had enough of those fat fingered doctors, cameras n hospitals!!                     ps {there is no sign of any blood} Thank you!!

GM Robert

I had my colon removed 9 years ago but small intestine connected straight to rectum . 7 years ago recieved my Ileostomy (Norman) and having discharge of mucus (not a solid) couple times a week was considered normal . Had that all the way up to February 2022 when they took out my rectum  . Hope this helps you in someway .

Hi Robert, yer very welcome here. The reassurance the guys above have given I hope puts your mind at ease.

Fat fingered Doctors 🥼 now that puts a shiver down anyone’s spine!! Or up it in fact. Maybe there should be a grade test for medics on finger diameter 😁👉🍩

@john68 I want to thank you all very much.  At least now I know I am not alone. It's a bit of a shock when it first happens and I wasnt sure if I had developed some sort of leak!!!!  I hestitated to call the care team. Yes, their fingers should be first put into something similar to a ring guage. I've had it with the big hands.[Im sure everone knows what I mean!}  Thank you all once again.  Ill keep the forum updated if there is a change. Robert

the last exam in that end was from a rather large gentleman , it was not pleasant 😱

I have heard that with some people the mucus discharge hardens and might be poo like , if you are worried contact your ostomy nurse , they are always my first port of call .
