Before my colostomy [just celebrated my 4th month post surgery] I used to enjoy foods such as kimchi, kraut and dill pickles and other pickled veggies. My question now is: can I eat them again? I do enjoy a yogurt brand, "Activia" that purports to be probiotics. And I tolerate it just fine. But I haven't tried any of the pickled or fermented foods. Thoughts?

Grandayout, I eat dill pickles and kimchi, and pickled beets with some frequency, and no problems with the fermented aspect of those foods. As always, if you’re not sure, try just a little bit, and note any changes to your bowel habits.

@granddayout ... I am one who believes pickled anything should be Food Group all on its own joy! Lol!   I have an ileostomy & a fridge shelf dedicated to pickles & anything new I find I love to try! A little secret... even when pickles are gone, I'll sip that brine to my hearts content! Lol, but I also back it up with milk & on occasion a swig of whipping cream from my dedicated little carton! Lolol!

I have not had any issues with pickles or the brine, lol, but I do go easy on added heat.  I think at the time I'm a heat level of low to almost medium! I have short gut syndrome & am still recovering from a nasty potassium lol of 2. So I'm still dealing with the fall out of too much scar tissue trying to strangle what I have left of unoperable guts, so I am re-learning which foods I tolerate all over again!

The best advice I learned here was from Eric, thank you again Eric!!! He said to "put your fork down between bites of food", then I also learned to chew my food to death before swallowing & in my case I learned to even cut it foods differently to avoid blockages, which I am named by my kids , the Queen of blockages, but since learning different food to eat & diff. ways to cut it for the benefit of small/ shorter strands of fibres... its made a huge difference in my weird gut issues.

I hope his helps & remember all things in moderation & add slowly & keep a journal incase you develope issues it helps to find the problem.

Enjoy your foods!!!

Linda

@tigerlily Hi Laurie, thank you for the comment! It gives me the encouragement I need to explore those foods again. In the past couple of months I've been able to reintroduce such foods as fresh tomato [heaven!] and avocado and fresh onion. And deviled eggs. Being able to eat again has been - is being - such a joy!

@dlkfiretruck Hi Linda, thanks for the comment. Even tho we have very different issues one I share is a tendency to not chew slow enough. And the whole moderation thing. But I am now ever so thankful I can again enjoy chips and salsa! Yes I do chew the heck out of the chips and I do mild salsa, but it's a fav snack back on my list! - I'm a Linda too!

I don't see why not! Provided you do chew well, there's no real cause for concern that I see from fermented food. If you'd have them in the past, your experience should be the same.

If you are new to fermented food, it may take your gut a little time to adjust to the probiotics. I'd expect some gas if it's been a while.

Let us know how it goes :)

Linda—Hi!!

When you mentioned drinking the pickle juice, it reminded me of reading about athletes who are cramping drinking pickle juice because it replenishes electrolytes. Maybe your body craving that is your body telling you that you need electrolytes?

Hi Linda,

I love tomatoes, but for me, if they are sliced I peel the skin off. If we eat out burgers, and the tomato is sitting on the hot burger, the peel usually comes off easily. If I am cooking at home, I peel the tomatoes. If you slice a little “x” on the bottom and put them in boiling water for 20-30 seconds and then put them in ice water for 5 min, the skin peels right off. And it isn’t long enough to cook the tomato.

Diced tomatoes I don’t worry about, but I do see the skins coming through in my bag, which is why I don’t take chances with the skins if they are sliced.

@squeakyandliza ...Thank you Liza. I always have a good supply of Gatorade, the blue one & recently the green apple one in my fridge & even in my go bag & my hospital go bag...! How many bags should we have! Ugh! Lolol!  I've no doubt I need the extra electrolytes but I could eat pickles any time of day or night just bcuz I love them so much! It was my Moms pickled beets that started this madness then my love for Manzanella & Greek Olives, Dill pickles, pickled ginger...🥒🫑🌶🫚🥕🧅🧄, I can keep going...lol!

I peel tomatoes as well & if I order a Burger thru a restaurant I always ask for diced/chopped tomatoe & diced onion & hold the lettuce, I hate getting my chin slapped by veggies esp. in public!!! Lol!

I see the peel in my pouch as well but I think bcuz its mixed with the rest of a bite of food & chopped, it does'nt make a type of road block big enough to cause a possible blockage.  So Good of you to mention how to skin a tomatoe!!

@granddayout ... Such a Great name you have Linda & so nice to meet you! The world of food is going to open up a lot in the near future for you! Once you get the fork & handheld foods put down or at least well lowered between chewing sessions, remember to drink fluids with a meal as well esp. if it is a food that expands in water.  Example... foods with cornmeal or a an Asian Salad with the bits of dry noodles. Enjoy with caution!
