Sunday, June 5th, 2016. Another Gutsy Walk for Crohn’s and Colitis has passed. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to go again this year!
This was the 21st Annual Gutsy Walk and the third that I’ve been to.
It’s always great to see so many people fighting for the same cause, but it’s also hard to see (and know) that so many people are still suffering because of IBD.
As of the morning of the event, I was able to raise $950, which was just short of my $1000 goal. Durham Region participants were able to raise about $70,000 so far, but we do have until early July to collect donations.
The walk was held at Lakeview Park in South Oshawa, which is where we had the walk last year. I really love the location as you get to see wildlife and enjoy the view of Lake Ontario.
It was a bit rainy towards the end of the walk, but the weather was warm and enjoyable.
I got to see some online friends and had a chance to talk to my young friend Jacob. Unfortunately, Jacob has been really struggling this past year, and it’s heartbreaking to see this young warrior suffering like this.
Getting to talk to other patients, you realize just how deficient the healthcare system can be sometimes. From the lack of adequate pain management to downplaying the needs of patients – this really needs to be something that has to change in the future.
My ostomy wasn’t any trouble at all, and I’m grateful that it’s allowed me to even do walks like this.
I’m looking forward to walking again next year, and I’m always grateful to my supporters for donating to a wonderful cause.
