I love this part of the forums where you can just talk about anything, not just the topic (ostomies)

I would like to thank Eric again :) for giving us the platform to vent/talk/ask questions to other ostomates. <3

If only there was a Bar lol

Haha! I'm afraid I don't have my liquor license =)

I think that all forums should have a lounge so people can get to know each other better!

Mine too. Although, part of me wishes that our kids could experience the "newness" of technology like I did when growing up. Right now they have phones that are more powerful than 10 computers I grew up with (^_-)

Yeah same, I was talking to my son about that yesterday as he had to look something up for school and only had to write it into google and it came up. When i was at school we took hours looking things up in books O_o

LOL. We had to bug our parents to take us to the library... Like 3 hours to research something that takes minutes now. I wish kids knew what kind of advantage they have over us!

I'm not very tech savvy but I know a bit. It's nice to have the 'instant' look-up ability for information but there's so much misinformation on the internet, it's not even funny. While our children have it so much easier than us in some ways, they are also far more vulnerable in other ways. The internet is a far more dangerous place than our childhood neighborhoods.

Anyway, I am hit and miss on the forums here but it is good to read through some of these posts and get to know some of you folks that way. It is nice to chat with people that understand the challenges, or that can understand being excited about poop. Like, who'da thunk poop would be so important? My friends, and even my husband think I'm weird now...

Hi,

Has anyone ever noticed an adverse effect from some foods on wafer/ring as to appliance  adhesion?

I was just wondering. It seemed to me I had a lot of trouble after eating papaya ( like twice a day for several days...in Hawaii). Even accounting for swimming, humidity etc...the leakage seemed much worse until I stopped eating it.  My bag was failing to stick several times a day ...very unusual for me. It took me a few days to make a possible connection.

Anyway, have any of you fellow ostomates ever experienced anything like this? either from papaya or something else?

Thanks!

Dona, if you suspect that's happening then try to keep a food diary to see if you can notice a pattern.

I do think there's some truth to that but haven't tested it myself.

Thanks for your reply. I just stopped eating papaya ( too bad, its yummy). I have been afraid to try it again. Maybe sometime!

I also wonder about acidic foods?

I do keep a 'change' diary. Every time I change my appliance I write down everything. What I used, the condition of my skin, stoma, the way I changed it , etc....pretty much every detail I can think of.

That REALLY helped me when I was having more leaks at the end of last summer. The use of the hairdryer  also REALLY helped. Used to dry & heat my skin and the wafer/ring.

Fortunately, that is also when I found VEGANOSTOMY as I was trolling through the netherworld of youtube!

The horrors! Thanks for the voice of reason in the wilderness!

We should have a large survey to see if ostomates find that certain foods cause more leaks ;) I'm sure that'd be an eye-opening study!

Like the hairdryer, I find that having a hot shower can really cause the adhesive on my wafer to stick like crazy! When I was in Orlando, the heat + daily showers caused my appliance to stick like super glue!

A survey could be very useful. I found that in the health care industry ( I am in USA) people have deep knowledge of very narrow areas. I never could get any dietary help even though  like you...( I saw the pix you posted) almost starved to death. Maybe together we can help fill in the blanks ( AKA gaping holes)!

Thanks for listening & chatting.

Hi Eric & fellow Ostomates.

I was wondering if it would be good to start a forum along the likes of HOT TIPS.Where we could share the things we have learned about that are helpful to us. I know we all must have some. Just kind of short ideas ( big ideas in a short space?)

Physically/medically, physiologically or socially. Or what ever.

I have been thinking of a  few things that might be useful to share, but I am not sure which forum to place them on.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Hey Dona, the best place would be in the tips and tricks forums HERE

Will that do? I'd love for you and others to share tips that have helped you!
