Hello Ostomates,

I have recently been plagued by a problem that I’ve never encountered before. I have noticed a smell coming from my pouch. I am not eating anything unusual that may cause this.

I am wearing an Eakin Ring, Convatec appliance and a Convatec pouch - the same products I have been wearing for years.

It’s not too bad. My partner doesn’t notice it, but I do.

Thoughts?

This is an important distinction.

Anecdotally, I'm sure that I've become hyper-sensitive to smells that could be my appliance, but isn't.

Here are a few things to try, or to ask yourself:

  1. If your bag has a filter, does covering the filter with tape get rid of the smell? Ideally, you'll want to cover it with tape when you change the appliance, that way there's no opportunity for smell to pass through.
  2. Do you notice smells right away or days after changing your appliance?
  3. If you check the underside of your wafer after removing it, do you notice if any output or swelling of the hydrocolloid itself extending beyond the inner circle of the wafer?
  4. Is it possible that any of your products have been changed without your knowledge? Years ago, hollister "improved" their bags, but many of us noticed a difference, with some noting smells when this was never a problem prior.
  5. Can you confirm that the tail end, especially the outlet, is clean when emptying your bag? Specifically the sides where the plastic is fused together. This is often a hard spot to clean out, and appliances with plastic closures create "blind spots" where output can get stuck without you being able to notice it.
  6. For due diligence, make sure anything that's been in contact with your appliance has been cleaned, including pouch covers, belts or bands, etc.

If any other clues come up, see if they point to a culprit.

But keep in mind that there may not be a smell coming from your appliance, so if it isn't being noticed by someone who could give you the honest truth, don't sweat it 🤗

I think those of us who wear the appliance are hyper viligent to the smells. I've heard from nurses that end ileostomies are smellier than temp ileostomies.

M9 ostomy deodorant drops by hollister are the only drops that seem to work for people.

The best we can do is keep our peristomal area clean, change appliance when needed . I also use a pampers sensitive wipe to wipe off the outside of the end of my bag and also the inside of the end of the bag after each empty.

Odors can come from there as well. Before doing that i also rinse my bag out with plain water using a  bottle from a bottled water.

We just have to be a little more hygienic to keep these odors down I guess. But like you, people  tell me they cant smell it but I can.

I can vouch for that!

Also, as an experiment, one could drop a mint candy in their appliance (or essential oil), and then see if they can smell that outside of the appliance. Since it would not smell like poop, it shouldn't give any false positives.

I will double check how much I wipe the end of the pouch.

Also curious as to what happens if you block the filter? Are there any repercussions?

Thanks for your replies!

What chemicals are in the M9 products? I’ve noticed that it works really well.

@chelly and @gardengypsy  ...Chelly,  where in the world did you get this list of the Ingredients?... thats some list.

M9 is the ultimate BEST odor remover in a pouch. Unfortunately they know it  & shopping around for the best price has become a regular & time consuming & costly event!! Tip... if you can find a pharmacy, the last one I bought from sold me 12 bottles for 600 $'s! That's 50 dollars a month. Yikes! But it was still better by far then the up to 85 dollars I've paid for one bottle on line. Plus they are 4 hours from me, I was visiting family there,  and shipping was free over 100 dollars. Locally far more expensive for one bottle.  One bottle lasts me one month & that's  with a very active Ileostomy with S.G.S. .

TIP ... I use a plastic glove, this glove helps with my Eczema. Less hand washing, though I wash the gloves while on my hand to extend use. You know, the enviromental thing...

Now, with two squares of double ply toilet tissue, fold into one square, I place my index finger in the center, fold it into a triangle over my finger & wrap the pointed edges around my finger,  then wipe the outer sides & edges and under the little folded flaps at the end of the opening,  insert finger & tissue into the open end of my pouch & wipe/dry the inside pouch opening.

Its soft enough that when a little pressure is applied it cleans into the melted together edges on each side & cleans that too.  I also first rinse twice with water.  I find the "water bottles" are too cumbersome in my purse, but 2 Tim Hortons juice bottles fit just right & still allowing for a double rinse, your choice. This over the finger wrap of tissue has also been a cost saver on the tissue.

Also, if you can & to save time & cleaning up after a spill, I had my son instal a *Bidet Hose* on the side of the cabinet running the water from the bathroom sink to the hose. Find one that allows for hot & cold water.  This has been as much of a game changer as the M9 if for me.

TIP... when the nozzle button became stiff  after almost 2 years of use & seemed to not work, I took apart the finger button to turn it on & soaked it in a jar of CLR, ( we have very hard water here )  rinsed it & put it back together it works like brand new again. Yup, "I'm of the repair it, don't toss it" generation! Lol!

I hope this helps.

@dlkfiretruck i rinse too but use a water bottle i  it in the bathroom. I found the M 9 ingredient list online somewhere.

I bought a couple bottles of the M9 in the last few months, but I've found that it also degrades the bag faster when you rent. Because it's getting up in the adhesive area. Let it melt foot, so I stopped buying it and it's also fragrant.I never realized that before. I kind of been just going without anything really but every once in a while.I will buy a bottle of it.
