Hi Friends,

I just changed my bag and my skin was just raw and I am in so much pain right now. I feel like no one else besides you all can understand this ostomy drama.

I do have a lot of other stress affecting me right now. I don’t know if that would have an impact on my skin or my ostomy.

I’m just feeling a little discouraged now and it feels better to tell someone who might understand. Thanks!!

Liza I was so sorry to see this pop up.  You are one of the strongest people I've met on this site so I have no doubt you'll get through this low point, but I know where you are coming from.  I've been there.  When I think back to my worst moments, I'm just grateful to my self then for soldiering through because good times, good health do come back and will for you.  To your question, I have no doubt that stress impacts us physically.  Personally, I practice Qigong to help me process stress but whatever you can do, I'd say spoil yourself a bit.  Splurge on an online class, soak your feet, buy a good book, whatever works.  Lots of good youtube videos too on meditation, deep breathing, Lee Holden Qigong - all can help process and reduce stress so your body can focus on healing your skin.  Sending all my best wishes your way!!!

Sorry you’re having a rough time.  It took me a long time to find out that my skin doesn’t tolerate adhesive and I’m not saying that’s you but I had to figure it out for myself.  Someone on a Reddit post suggested domeboro it’s an over the counter rash relief solution to help broken skin heal quicker.  I used to need to just open my stoma to air as much as possible to heal.  I use Marlen convex pouches now without a ring, less product on my skin better, and they last 7-10 days.  I use a thin cloth elastic to keep light pressure make sure it stays snug warmth of skin keeps adhesion seal.  Good Luck!!!

Liza... I'm sorry to hear this! How painful & awful & even frightening. I really hope this heals quickly for you, its the last thing you need!

I know for myself when my stress levels rise, my eczema starts to flare & it stays bad for a long time or until I slow down & take extra care of myself & eliminate stresses in my life & even in my own  expectations of myself in regards to what I want & think I need to do.

After a  recent pouch change I started to itch wildly under my wafer & area. I had done or used nothing new.  So I started to peel back the tapes & wafer & there was no leak at all but an area of swelling, like a huge welt covering the whole upper right quarter under tapes & all. I admit I was so irritated by this discovery & more so bcuz my hands were dealing with a new eczema breakout too.  I applied my eczema cream to the area bcuz I knew it would at least stop the deep burning itch & amazingly it settled down rather quickly & the wafer stuck right down securely & I did'nt even have to change it at all.

Stress??? Laying in bed I calculated the stresses I was dealing with & "things" I expected myself to accomplish that week & in the weeks to come. I trimmed those wanted efforts down to a dull roar & after a few days my hands & finger tip skin splits began to heal.  I admit to being terrified that I had become allergic to anything sticking to my tummy & felt so grateful that was not the problem.  My heart goes out to anyone of you here & not here yet that are dealing with adhesive alledergies! Hugs to you all.

Loveanimals... what brand are the Marlen convetex pouches & where might they be available & is there a link you can place here ?

Linda

I'm so sorry that you're struggling @squeakyandliza.

Are you able to keep your appliance off for a few hours during your next appliance change? I've had to do that a few times before, and it really helps with raw/weepy skin, since it gives the skin some time to dry. This is accelerated by putting stoma powder, or baby powder, or antifungal powder on the weepy area and just letting it air out.

I know it feels discouraging right now, but things will get back on track. We all go through these ups and downs, so I think every one of us here can relate.

Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate.

Liza, I’m so sorry to hear this. It’s just not fair. Have you ever tried AG (silver) powder? It was in my bag of supplies when I was discharged from the hospital, but I’ve never had to use it. But I know some people find it really helpful. Just a thought. You are right to vent on this site. You never know when a suggestion you find here will make a huge difference for you. And anyway, you can be sure that we’re all empathizing with your frustration, and wish we could wave a magic wand to fix it.

Thank you are for your responses!  You guys are my tribe. ❤️

I appreciate all the suggestions!  Your thoughtfulness in making them means so much to me.

I do have silver powder. I’ve only used it once, but will try it again. Squeaky is not very well behaved, but I will see if I can figure out how to let him out to breathe for a while. There may end up being a funny story as a result. 🤣

Oh, and as a follow up on all the granulomas, I was able to get a container of silver nitrate sticks to burn them off. But I couldn’t get the same lidocaine the stoma nurse uses. What the pharmacy did end up getting me is a roll-on lidocaine, but it says not to use on broken skin. So I’m going to go see the ostomy nurse and ask her if it is safe to use. So far I have just burned off some granulomas without it. The ones entirely on the stoma don’t hurt, but the ones on the edge hurt so bad when I touch them with the silver nitrate.

I appreciate you all so much!!  And knowing you are there for me when I am having a bad day means the world to me. Thanks!!

Liza... I'm wondering if  BACTINE would work to numb the area enough? Its a great spray product available in the first aid isle at the pharmacy.  I've used for years. Its a lidocaine disinfecting spray you could use on a Q-aTip to apply to the area.  The numbing effect has been so helpful in stopping young children from further tears & pain after an injury no matter how small. I've used it for years on my own family & injuries including cooking burns. It numbs beautifully, is usually around 10 dollars.  On one Grands nasty facial scrape wound it took 3 spritzes & dabbing off & reapplying moments with fanning the wound for the pain to stop but with each spritz the child settled down & called it "magic spray".
