Maybe this will make someone laugh.

So, I have set up our guest bathroom as ostomy central. I have all the supplies I need in there in baskets on the counter and on a set of shelves behind me. I have the big mirror and another small mirror on the counter that spins to be either regular or magnified. Basically it is the perfect setup for me to change my ostomy. Which as often as I change it, is very important.

I went through a stretch where I changed it about 9 times in 10 days. Sometimes I would get 2 days and sometimes I would have to do 2 in a day. Fortunately they were on days I was working from home, or it was in the evening, so I had my dedicated ostomy bathroom.

Then I got a leak while I was at the office. So I had to change it in a bathroom stall with my little magnet mirror and a baggie of supplies with a magnet in it so I could hang it on the stall door, and my trash bag tucked into my pants. People were coming and going from the restroom and I was trying to be quick. I got it changed and went back to my desk instead of sitting back in my recliner for half an hour with my hand over it to warm it to make it stick better.

Wouldn't you know it. That ostomy bag lasted almost 6 days!! It’s crazy!  🤷🏻‍♀️

Well, now! Since you know it CAN be done, you have to figure out what the magic ingredient was 😁

Yes! Irony!  First of all, I admire and envy your ostomy bathroom! lol  Much better than lugging it all out on change day.  I'm curious why you change so often.  Is it worry about leaks or the feeling of having a clean bag?  Also, do you use one or two piece?  The first year of my ileostomy, it was a trial and error time to find the right system and I had more leaks.  Also, mentally I had a hard time adjusting and emptied all the time because of a sense of feeling "clean".  As time went on, I found the right system and became more comfortable.  I now use one piece and I learned that changing too often really damaged my skin.  After 7 years, it was a big relief to get to the stage where I go 6-7 days between changes and rarely have a leak.

@jattzl

I change so often because of actual leaks. I rarely change for any other reason. 😕

@squeakyandliza  ... Oh Liza! That is really funny!!! I couldn't help but laugh because you've struggled so much with leaks & I'd be willing to guess even *pouch changing fatigue* would set in!!  The break must have been AWESOME!!!!

I have found using the blow dryer to warm the wafer before putting it on has accomplished the same result as warming it after its on, its quicker too! Lol!  Plus it's giving me 6 plus days wear time now, even with bending & picking up my 2 yr old Grand D & most always carrying her against the side of my ostomy,  babysitting 3 days a week still.   I am really hoping ofcourse its not just an odd cooperative batch of pouches with a great wafer mix!! Lol! I'm still getting leaks thru that stupid useless vent on the Hollister pouch, plus seam leaks from the filter so I've just changed back to what I started with right from surgery!!  I'll certainly continue to add the  Osto EZ Vents though. I like that thing a lot!! It would be nice if they came already attached  though! lol!

I'm so glad you had a bit of  break... now it would be really great if this became the norm for you! I can't help but wonder if in the process of  reclining fluid or heat from your hand caused moisture to form under the wafer & it caused break down to occur & a leak much sooner then your "6 day" wear time! Yaaayyyyy!!! Congratulations!!!

Well, I learned that changing my bag in the bathroom stall at work is not the magic solution I had hoped. I had to change it at work today, at about 3:00. It is now 6:45 and I already have a leak. Ugh

@squeakyandliza Noooooo!

When you're at home and have a bit of time to experiment, could you try the following:

  • Clean the skin around your stoma with rubbing alcohol (I've used 50% and 75%, with 75% being better), but make sure you wrap your stoma with something so the alcohol doesn't touch it.
  • After you apply your wafer, get something like a toilet paper roll and place it over and around your stoma and hold that in place, so it applies a bit of pressure on your wafer for about a minute.

This should give the adhesive the absolute best chance to stick. I've regularly achieved 7-10 days without a single leak doing these two things during my routine.

Good luck!!

Hmmmm.

The quick and hopefully not dirty one lasted 6 days. Do you think there may be something that you did not do in that circumstance, that you do when you have time for the full regime that might make a difference?

Why?
