My doctors want me on a nutrition type ensure or boost to get vitamins, nutrition and to help to gain some weight. Problem is they have been causing diahrhea. Not sure if its the sugar, milk or some of the vitamins. Ive tried ensure protein max but the same issues. Then just today I got boost glucose control but only to find out that they use sucralose which is a sugar alcohol and again major watery stools.

Im wondering if anyone else with an ileostomy has had to drink these and if there's one that may not cause this side effect for us. My PCP is clueless about this.

The only thing I've had that would be close to Boost would be either plant-based protein powders or plant-based meal replacements (like from the brand VEGA).

For diarrhea, there would be a few things I'd look at:

    1. Dairy. Try to find a dairy-free,or at least a lactose-free version.
    2. Sugar or artificial sweeteners can cause stomach upset and/or loose output. Hopefully, you aren't sensitive to both!
    3. High fat content. These products are usually designed to provide calories for a single meal, but those calories have to come from somewhere. Most of the time, it's fat in the form of oil. This may cause issues for some. If not fat, then it would need some carb/sugar base, which might end up having the same effect!
    4. Probiotics. Some products include probiotics, which can cause temporary stomach upset and gas. Check to see if the stuff you've been taking has any. If so, it may just need some time (a week or so) for your gut to adjust.

I've used a meal replacement from the company Soylent, and found it to be well-tolerated. It does contain sucralose as the last ingredient, but if you can get your hands on some, it might be worth a try.

I can't drink nutritional drinks at all without the same affects.  I lost way more weight trying to gain weight because of them.

I was told to eat foods like cream soups, gravies on meats, potatoes, cheese  Sauces on veggies... but to keep it as healthy as possible at the same time... lol!

@dlkfiretruck I can totally get that. Loosing more weight from the diahrhea. plus feeling dehydrated and sick. The stomach cramps and grumblining too. Not fun.

Another thing to mention about Kate Farms products is that they are also vegan, and most of their products can also be used with tube feeding. So, they really offer something special!

@veganostomy the soylent my med supply company does not carry and therefore I can't get it through insurance. The nutritionist from my supply companies and I had a talk. The kate farms has things in it thst would cause diahrhea in which I already suffer high  output.  I would have loved to do that one. So we looked at all the boost and ensure they carry and decided to just go with the original ensure only because i know I tolerated one a bit better than the others. I will just have to limit to 1 per day.

I was really interested in that soylent too. Shame they dont have it.

@dlkfiretruck hello Linda,

Yes if im very careful to take immodium and eat only thickening foods for the remainder of the day and before hand. I had 2 yesterday abd I was ok. The output was more on peanut butter consistency and not pure watery so I consider thats good. Ill just have to be very careful with it.

I like the idea of drinking it due to my high output. I want to make sure im getting nutrition .

You know I like those nutrition cups called magic cups also. They have me those in the nursing center after my surgery. I don't believe my insurance will cover those though.

That really is a shame! I really hate how insurance providers don't cover things that might actually work better for the person, including appliances and special food. It costs more to be using products that are less than ideal, and makes no sense (or dollars!) for them to be doing that.

If you can keep it peanut butter consistency, that would be a good thing. Ileostomy output can be considered typical even if it's mostly liquid or loose... as long as what's coming out isn't more than what's going in, that would be pretty normal and shouldn't be a cause for alarm.

I do really wish you could try the soylent, though. 😣

@veganostomy hi,

Yes I was hoping to get the soy one.no DME here carry them only walmart.  Insurance i am learning that these durable medical equipment companies all work out contracts with these insurance companies as tp what they will cover with them and not cover. Each DME may have a different contract with insurancev and one may have a contract that the insurance will pay but another may not. Im thinking they probably negotiate these contracts with each other. It's really strange.

Mine did have the kate farms and my insurance covers but a lot of the ngredients I would not be able to tolerate with ileostomy. A whole lot of things in them that would cause loose or watery stool. They looked very nutritious though.

Do you think it might be worth trying? Even just for a few days? If it doesn't cause a worsening of your output, you may get the nutritional benefits, which might arguably be more important for you.

It's a tough call, for sure, especially when you've identified ingredients that could worsen your output.

@veganostomy well, they put broccoli and all kinds of things in all of them including rosemary and spices . They all have a whole lots in them that will cause me issues. Too bad too because the ingredients look healthy and nutritious and yes vegan. I also have gerd as well but me and the nutritionsist had a phone consult about all of this and there seems be be nothing except that original vanilla  ensure one but sometimes the milk in it can give me diathrhea if im not careful.

Im tempted to call the makers of that soy one to see if they can send me about 4 bottles as a sample to try and to ask if any  DME in  the US carries them.

Oh man, they're really trying to make it gourmet at the detriment of people which sensitive digestive systems! I guess that's why I like soylent. It's the opposite.

You've got nothing to lose! They might just offer some path to freebies or a trial package. I wonder if you could work through your nutritionist or stoma nurse to get samples... these companies often send freebies to people who work with patients or clients.

Can't seem to find a number for the soylent. I had a massive disaster drinking 2 ensure the other day. Thinking I'm going to drink these and get some healthy vitamins in me. I was emptying my bag every 15 minutes for hours. Boy did I regret drinking them. My stomach was a wreck!! Went through about 2 rolls of toilet paper as well.

I later looked up all ingredients to see what can be causing this. Well, they put sucralose in them which is a substitute sugar. Sugar alcohol which I'm trying to avoid. I dont understand why when they already have sugar in them.

Yes the Kate farms look very healthy but for an ileostomy they will not be very friendly. I can just see a ballooned up bag from broccoli and the likes and lots of bile acids from the spices. I think my poor tummy would be in shambles.

Im.still on the hunt for soylent phone number and on the hunt for a friendly nutrition drink for ileostomy.

That sounds awful! The only thing that can "clean me out" quickly is prune juice and raw spinach (cooked is fine, though!). But that's by choice for me.

I wonder. See if there are other companies that offer bags for TPN or tube feeding... you never know if they have other products that would be consumed by mouth and more friendly for your tummy.
