What are the things to consider if one has an ileostomy and needs lumbar spinal surgery and cannot wear a brace after the surgery?

Hi Ya, Am I right in saying you feel the brace will be in the way of the pouch?

Welcome PFLPlaya,

I don't know about this first hand. But  Same question as John just above me. Does the back brace cover the front part of you where your stoma is?  I am sure you have thought about cutting a hole in it so it would fit over your appliance. I know the hernia wraps are made like that. Better ask the back brace specialist and I am hoping that someone else here will have more first hand knowledge of your situation.

Good luck and welcome.

HI Playa, I Googled you surgery to come.  I didn't see anything about a back brace, but there is much Physical therapy after wards.  But if you are getting a back brace, and need alterations, how about having a seamstress at a dry cleaner help u out?  Cutting these elastic materials may/will ravel and will need proper stitching for that area that your concerned with.. I see that the recovery can take 12 weeks or more..

Also, try to talk with your GI doctor .. or whoever did your surgery-- They may know better about the area your worried about and how long you had your surgery when u became an Ostomate.

AND your P. theraphy trainer    MUST know of your illestomcy as you CANNOT do many excerise's now..  OR for ever!! Got to watch your back on this--no pun intended...

Best of luck and welcome--- to us  :-) and join us at the lounge sometime.. Tell us where your from?

Maybe Eric has something on this issue...

Yes, if it's too tight the contents can't easily fall to the bottom and more importantly, the stoma will be pushed in .

Have you  seen these type of braces?  Is a brace included for your recovery?

If you can post or link a photo of the brace you'll be using, I think we'll have more ideas.

If it does come over the appliance, you can (As Bubbles suggested) try a stoma guard.

But let's see what kind of brace you're referring to so we can be more helpful 😀

Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate.

Hullo.  I had an ileostomy just over a year ago.  I have recently suffered several fractures of the lumbar spine, and have been looking at braces/girdles to accommodate a large parastomal hernia.  I came across a pregnancy girdle that might help you.  It has a back brace and two panels around the front, one across the top of the abdomen and one across the bottom.  If you google  ‘pregnancy girdle’ and click on images you will find it.  I bought one and I will be able to wear it with some alteration for my hernia.  They are not expensive - the prices on eBay range from $13 to $63 (don’t know why the price discrepancy).

Hope this helps.

I have not seen it . The surgeon said it would be used after the spinal surgery to stabilize the back

Pigfromlaplaya, did you ever figure an answer out?

I'm to have lumbar surgery in the next month or two.  I asked the surgeon what he will do about the ostomy during surgery.  He said it wouldn't be a problem.  I said it probably would, as it needs to be emptied, even when I don't have food in me.  I asked his office to contact my colo-rectal surgeon for ideas.

I have the same thoughts about a brace, too.  What you said, Eric, was to consider wearing a stoma guard underneath starting with the fitting?

Does't the girdle cover the stoma too tightly?

I'm delaying the lumbar surgery until I get enough answers so that I [and the surgeon] both know that we've done the best to prepare for it.

I would really like to hear from you after you have recovered from the surgery.

Good idea, waiting until you have everything that you need for recovery......... That would be my line of preperations.. Just have to think for yourself-- We are a bit different.. But better than those that don't fall and get back up!! This is why the Doctors don't understand us..

The one who falls, and gets up-is-so much stronger, than the one who never falls.. (un-known)....  Best to you two !! Marcie........

Thanks, I am in the D.C. area, but I get a great catalog from Parthenon in Salt Lake City which has all ostomy suppliers in it. I'll look there first. If not in there, the catalog has phone numbers for all of them and I'll call.

Hey,laplaya player, we are almost neighbors. I attend the ostomate group in the Anne Arundel Medical Center. We meet the first Thursday night of each month at 7:30 pm. We have interesting meetings. I found it to be a tremendous help.
