Even though my partial sigmoid colon removal was over a year ago...it's only been the past 3 months that I have felt confident enough to try different foods that were previously off limits. I am able to eat Mexican food now and also have a variety of beans. I am interested in trying Spinach Quiche, which I love. Would this be safe at where I am now..a year and 5 months post surgery?? Hi Jillian, Glad to hear you have been broadening your diet. Always try small amounts of a new food. I remember reading years ago a guy in Japan had eaten a bicycle. He had filed of a little every day for 25 years Just don’t try the bike diet just yet 😂 . Enjoy eating a variety of foods 👍 ileostomy 31st August 1994 for Crohns I am interested in trying Spinach Quiche, which I love. Would this be safe at where I am now..a year and 5 months post surgery?? I don't eat Quiché, but looking at a few recipes, it looks like the only real concern I'd have would be mushrooms. But chewing well, and mushrooms aren't that tough! I'd go easy on it the first time, and adjust the amount when you know how it affects you. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. I remember reading years ago a guy in Japan had eaten a bicycle. He had filed of a little every day for 25 years Just don’t try the bike diet just yet 😂 I had to look this up and came across this! https://www.ripleys.com/weird-news/mangetout/ "Over the course of Monsieur Mangetout’s career, his diet included 18 bicycles, seven TV sets, two beds, 15 supermarket trolleys, a computer, a coffin (handles and all), a pair of skis and six chandeliers. That’s pretty dang impressive by anybody’s standards, but the pinnacle of his entertainment career was the time he ate a whole dang airplane. That’s right. In 1978, he ate an entire Cessna 150 airplane. That is to say, he began eating it in 1978, because it was a laborious piece-by-piece process that took two years. Finally, in 1980, he emerged from the epic battle of man versus flying machine victorious." Good lord! Here we are wondering whether real food will be safe for us to eat, and this man consumed an airplane! 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. @veganostomy absolutely love that the guy calls himself Mangetout! Truth in advertising. I would echo what others have already said, Jillian. Start small and try to isolate different foods so you know if something in particular isn’t working out for you. With a sigmoid colostomy (I have one too) you should be able to eat pretty much everything you were able to eat before your surgery. The biggest difference is that without a rectum, your body can’t store stool prior to a BM like it did before, so higher fibre food might mean you notice an increase in the frequency of output. Laurie Just a semicolon absolutely love that the guy calls himself Mangetout! Truth in advertising. I completely missed that! Haha, what a legend! Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. @veganostomy I sent the article to my brother, an aerospace engineer. He wondered if he died of metal fatigue.😂 Laurie Just a semicolon Hey Jillian, I had spinach smoothies 5 days post-op colostomy surgery. I found spinach is a great laxative (especially combined with ground flax seeds). Since it was in smoothies, the spinach was ground up really well. So if you make a quiche, you could try blending spinach (and mushrooms too) quite finely, just to be safe. Otherwise, chew the heck out of it :D Incontinent in a better way, since 12 July 2023
