For the first six months, we ( my wife and I ) were flying blind in a fog, trying to find out how to live with my Ostomy. We were using trail and error. And losing the battle for our sanity. After all, how many times can you stand waking up to a brown puddle oozing all over. We discovered an Ostomy Group. The Anne Arundel Ostomy Association is a 45 mile trip to Annapolis. It meets first Thursday night of the month. And it was a marriage and life saver . They have WOCN in attendance, and their attitude is "been there, done that ". Open discussions and medical lectures help to grasp the scope of the ostomates challenges. We became normalized. And most importantly, poop is not a dirty word. And asshole jokes are okay, too. Still, once a month wasn't doing it for us. We searched and found the Greater Baltimore Ostomy Association. They meet 4 times a year. Their focus is on educational information. And a yearly products show. New friends, local , etc. Tremendous advantages to both types of groups. I would like to join more such groups. I don't think that Facebook groups can replace the face to face contact advantage . What do you think? Do you have access to more or are willing to drive a bit out of the way to attend other ones? I really enjoyed the group meets and have spoken at several, but the closest one to me has mostly people well outside of my age group, so it's more difficult talking about things that would normally be in the way of someone in their 20's or 30's. The education events and product introductions are highly valuable. For anyone who can't attend regular group meetings, an effort should still be made to get to one of those events. I'm glad to hear that you've been able to make use of those groups! Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. I wonder why. This group (VeganOstomy ) seems to attract all ages, or are we all over 60? I scrolled back a few months and noticed that most of us are not youth in body, even though we are in mind. Maybe, a socialogist could enlighten us about this subject. Personally, I like this blog, I was able to LET it out in typing and found faster friends here.. I am able to help you and am able to have a laugh too. Breaking up this poopy mess of adjustments of some ha ha's, is great.. IT let me find my personality that I though that I lost.. So, in that matter, I found the old me. Found more information Re: Eric and his products views. His personality also can gave me a laugh-but he is straight forward with his business which is US !! Helping US.. HE works hard for me and you all.. I also found here, I can form my own options of products as we are all different in skin issues and never mind the sores that we have dealt and deal with.. We all are able to help each other with this.. (even tho some say your not to do that) Heck, if you got a sore around your stoma, got to do something outside of the text book- If not, get to the ostomy nurse..... We send pictures, make compairsons.. Most of all we are a family ! And we respect each other.. My support group has the am as "z' with speakers, fun, some open meetings which I like. And we do get to talk a bit with each other and see in person each other .. (even tho the other groups in the building have to look into our window and stare at us odd balls) I just wave my pouch at them and smile smile smile... :-) We have speakers, and nurses ( which I know personally through out my long hospital ordeal) Yes, some are older than me. But guess what?? Getting some in there that are 40 and 50's now.. New blood, they have so much energy and ready to conquer and get so involved in the managements of my support group.. I want so much for us to be able to go on a trip together as ostomates.. Break up is smaller groups and this indeed will be a step forward for me and all of us.. SUPPORT .. I am gong to bring up a river cruise down the Ct. river this summer. It takes 3 hours all together.. I think that we and I can handle that.. As we all will have each other to lean on... What can go wrong? :-( Shall see huh?   Many thanks to my friends/family here again.. Love you all!! I couldn't get this far mentally without you!!! Marcie.. 2014 - 3 strangulations of colon, Ulcerative colitis, removal of colon, illiostomcy named woooh Nellie.. Marcie's Support Group in West Hartford Ct. is: West Hartford Ostomy support Group--15 Starkel Rd. West Hartford, Ct. Located at the senior Center.    Meets once a month Thursday night. We have a President, vice President, treasurer, secretary, program director, fund chair, hospitality, newsletter, publicity, visitation members that are all vote for every year. The news letter is Bi-Monthly and sent to your home.. And to your E-mail address. There are dues of $15.00 per year which goes to the news letter, and foods as we do have a social before the meetings. (if one cannot afford the dues, some of us give into that pot) This is a well organized group of people and serious with helping everyone (like here) to get through with ease) The first step in person is the best step here.. We have people come before their operations and receive a visit-I received many visits at home from the president and now best respectable friends for life.. Marcie............  2014 - 3 strangulations of colon, Ulcerative colitis, removal of colon, illiostomcy named woooh Nellie.. Hey All There is a support group close to me here bout 20 minutes away in Rancho Mirage Ca . I went to it only once before my surgery to get Norman although it was very helpful . Funny thing is they always meet on Thursday too ! They helped me make my decision to have the surgery for my ostomy . But I haven't been back guess I'm just not a real outgoing social kinda person . I found Eric's site asked him a question and he invited me to check out his site and here I am . This right here is my support group it is great for me I can get on it everyday at any time and not have to wait for a one time a month meeting . I have learned a lot here and everybody has helped me with questions and issues I have had . Like Marcie said I made friends and a new family here . Hey Z easy on the over 60 thing Lol . I won't be 60 for a month and a half . Lol . Funny but the group I went to seemed to all be older too . I was like the kid in the group Hahaha imagine that !! I think here we have quite a range in ages . Proctectomy , Ileostomy , Ulcerative Colitis I'm a 43 year old myself. Granted I do get taken for being in my 20's at times. Until they note the grey in the blonde and the slight wrinkles... Crohn's Colitis, Ilieostomy, Proctocolectomy November 2017 I looked in my 40's too-until I got sick.. Then it all went down hill real fast.. It happens!! What a catch up in time... That also was a shock along with Nellie.. What ever...... 2014 - 3 strangulations of colon, Ulcerative colitis, removal of colon, illiostomcy named woooh Nellie.. Ah, Robert and Felicity, you're just a bunch of kids just hanging on to the wise words of wisdom emanating from us old fogies. Like your perspective, though. This group (VeganOstomy ) seems to attract all ages, or are we all over 60? I scrolled back a few months and noticed that most of us are not youth in body, even though we are in mind. Maybe, a socialogist could enlighten us about this subject. I can find out about the demographics through other social media platforms (because of all the personal information they collect), but I don't track demographics on this site. Each platform caters to different age groups and each country also sees a shifts in this regard.  It's quite fascinating when you dig into the data. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate.
