A "perfect" stoma is one that's round, protrudes about an inch, and points out.

Of course, very few people have a perfect stoma and some stomas change with time.

If someone has a stoma that is flat or goes below the skin, a convex appliance is often recommended. Convex appliances apply pressure on the skin around the stoma, pushing it out.

I hope that helps 😊

Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate.

Mine sticks out about half an inch . Was started from the hospital with a flat base but had leaking problems was then told to use a convex base and haven't had a leak since .

Oscar is about an inch long when he's not working. He's a bit odd shaped at the base because he is a Loop Ostomy, he has another opening below. WOCN stated it was ok to cover the bottom opening as long as it did not cause leak issues. I ought to try to get a clear picture before I get redone.
