There is a lot of information about how to reduce or eliminate gas in in an Ostomy pouch. My problem is the reverse. As soon as I put on an appliance ( making sure there is air in the pouch) within minutes the air is sucked out causing it to be flush with my skin, not only is this uncomfortable it also can lead to leaks. I have tried both a one piece and a two piece appliance and it happens with whatever product I use. I have tried covering the filter and stuffing toilet paper inside, no luck. I would really appreciate some feedback. Thanks!! Have you tried a filter-less bag? Those work pretty well for me. When I tried bags with filters the same happened to me as to you - within a short time my stoma looked to be shrink-wrapped! Colostomy 4/30/18. I use filterless bags too .( Hollister two piece system). I then add an osto EZ vent. ( lots of info on these on VO). It looks like the kind of thing you would blow up a beach ball with. They stick on to the bag. That way you can control how much gas you want to let in or out. Good luck. Onset of severe Ulcerative Colitus Oct.2012. Subtotal colectomy with illiostomy July 2015; Peristomal hernia repair ( Sugarbaker, mesh, laparoscopic) May 2017. Hi iebrowne, I use a Coloplast one piece and I put a shower sticker over the filter. I also add a little air to the bag. With the exception of a one time bad batch of bags, this has worked for me very well. Good luck. Stella Thank you for the feedback. The comment that "my stoma looked like it was shrink wrapped," is exactly what happens to me regardless if I use a pouch with or without a filter. @iebrowne...hello there! I'm not sure there is any easy remedy to your shrinkwrapped stoma!! May I suggest eating more gassy foods! lol! The odd times I have had this issue using the osto ez vent was a part of the issue being solve. It's easy enough to put on & then to open the cap & to allow air back into the pouch. Good luck! Linda @iebrowne When I empty I try to remember to make sure there is a little air in the bag before I close it. But .... sometimes I have to wonder - where did the air go? Some sort of chemistry and physics thing, must be. I am not much of a scientist! Colostomy 4/30/18. Thank you for your suggestion. I am in the process of switching from a two piece system that I have been using for many years, that no longer meets my needs. It has been very confusing as there are so many systems out there, with pros and cons. I have narrowed it down though, one piece, no filter and have added the osto-ez vent thanks to comments made on this forum, so thanks to everyone who posted suggestions. Irene. @iebrowne Let us know how the new setup works for you. I also try to make sure that I have some air in the bag when I empty, and sometimes need to add air when I'm not emptying my appliance because air gets sucked out (from the filter). Best of luck! Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate.
