I thought I'd ask others's opinions on the best bags for water.Β Pretty much because I'm quarantined bored 😆.Β I pretty much have made my decision, but wanted to see what you guys thought.Β I like soaks in the hot tub.Β I've just gotten back into that since surgery.Β I've tried Hollister 2-piece with the New Image Cera plus, Convatec 2-piece with the Natura Durahesive moldable accordion flange, and the Coloplast Sensura Mio Click 2-piece.Β The Convatec seem to be the worst. I changed my bag yesterday and soaked in the hot tub today and it is falling off.Β The flange itself seems to be okay in water, but the adhesive around the flange just starts to peel off almost immediately.Β I've worn both the Hollister and Coloplast for 5 days with a soak every day, and they have shown no signs of separation.Β The adhesive tape around the Hollister flange stays stuck completely with no signs of peeling.Β I prefer the Hollister simply because it is more comfortable for me than the Coloplast, but Coloplast seems to be really good in water also. Any thoughts?Β Β Β Ulcerative Colitis (1995) Hi, I swim using my Hollister stuff. Two piece with the Cera plus plate ( wafer?). It lasts very well. I do dry if off and give it a blast ( not too hot) from the hair dryer and re apply pressure to the wafer. Another thing that works is to roll up the bag ( after you empty it..ha!) and then cover the whole thing with Press and Seal plastic wrap. It sticks well enough that water will NOT get in. I was amazed. Someone here suggested it a while ago. ( Thanks for that whoever it was) You have to use enough to have about three inches all the way around where it contacts your skin. Make sure there are no creases or folds, and press it down and hold it. Its not a sticky adhesive and the warmth of your hands and the pressure it what seals it down. Its easy to remove too, it does not adhere to the appliance and doesn't pull it off when removed. I use it for showers too, when I don't want to get the bag wet. LOVE it! Good luck ... Onset of severe Ulcerative Colitus Oct.2012. Subtotal colectomy with illiostomy July 2015; Peristomal hernia repair ( Sugarbaker, mesh, laparoscopic) May 2017. Hi, I'm new at this, but so far , I have tried Hollister 2 piece out of hospital, and now I am using coloplast two piece. I find the coloplast much better in water! You can also look into a steath belt ,designed for swimming. Eric has a nice review of it.. Kevin Dieffenbach Great question Glen! Hollister is a pretty good pouch.Β Dona... are you referring to the self sticking wrap? It has one sticky side right? Do you use extra tape and do you stick it to yourself at all or just to the areas of the bag? How do you work around the circle and behind the top edge? Oops ...accidentalΒ delete of some info...editing.. I took a two hour hot bath the other night and I was mighty impressed with how it stayed on.Β I use the C Shaped tapes all the time.Β Hollister 8331 with a vent.Β The C tapes seemed to swell where water got under and the edges lifted about a 1/4 inch into the tape, but I still had a really good seal. Linda Yes. Β I'm amazed at how long I can soak in hot water with Hollister. Β Doesn't seem to affect it at all. Β I'm so happy, because I love hot soaks, and I thought that would be a thing of the past after my surgery. Β Not the case, and I'm happy. Β Ulcerative Colitis (1995) Thanks, Kevin. Β I'm pretty much a newbie too. Β And yes, Coloplast does seem to stick well. Β In fact, the only complaint I have about Coloplast is that they stick a bit too well to me and I have problems getting them off sometimes. Β Ulcerative Colitis (1995) This is funny that you posted this today because I was getting ready to post about showers. Since they are related, I will just post mine here, if thatβs is okay. 🙂 Β Since I was a teenager I have always been a shower every morning person. Then after my emergency surgery and 2 week hospital stay in 2018, I was left with a wound pump and so weak that I had to use a walker for a couple months, so sponge baths only. After several months, my home nurse told me I could disconnect the wound pump an hour before she came to change my dressing, so I could jump in the shower. That first shower after all that time was amazing!! Β So I was taking up to 3 showers a week on wound dressing days. Then in May of 2019, the wound pump came off and we went to aquacel and gauze changes my husband does. So, again showers were timed around wound dressing changes. I had gone back to work around that time, so we were adapting to both our schedules, still trying to get showers every other day.Β So now, almost 2 years after my surgery, I still have the wound and we are changing the dressing just once a day. With my husband working from home right now, I have the most freedom with my shower schedule and could probably shower every day. But here is my problem... i have absolutely the worst time keeping my wafers stuck to my body, and showering makes it so much worse. I am using the Coloplast Sensura Mio 2 piece click and I always use the wafer extenders. But I have so much trouble with them staying stuck on the left side (toward the wound) I attribute it to all the scar tissue and puckering of the skin. If I stay out of water, I can baby it along, but when the water gets under the wafer, it is all downhill from there. I have tried taping down the edge with waterproof tape, but that doesnβt stick any better.Β Part of my problem, I believe, is that there isnβt a lot of room between the wound and the ostomy. Once I get the wafer and extenders on, there is only about half an inch left for my husband to tape the wound dressing on. If there was more room, I could do something like Dona suggested with the plastic wrap.Β I love sitting in a hot tub, so I hope once my wound is healed, I can get it figured out. I know I canβt go in a hot tub with an open wound, so I have time. 🙂 We donβt have one, but when we got to the coast, we always rent a condo that has one on the deck overlooking the ocean. Or if we go to the mountains, we rent a house that has one.Β So, any ideas, anyone, on how to keep my wafer stuck, especially in the shower?? Thanks Glenn, for starting this topic and letting me hijack it with all my shower talk. 🤣 -Liza Glen...have you ever tried the "adhesive remover" SPRAY? Hollister used to stick like velcro to my skin. Even after a hot bath where you think the warmth would make removal easier, they were hard to get off.Β 😷 I don't mean to be rude...sorry, you can't see my face,Β I'm laughing under the mask! 🤣😂🤣🙊 oops... 😷...I'll behave now! 😷! I forgot, 🤣😂🤣 this is likelyΒ rude in public. 😷 sorry again!Β Β After EricΒ 😇 posted about the spray, I ordered it &Β love the stuff.Β Β My son reminded me I have been in a hot tub with my pouch.Β 🤣! 🤦♀️🙊😷! Sorry!Β There's something to be said about concussions and memory! 😷 I had no issues withΒ it then.Β But he said I was afraid if may come off so I didΒ notΒ eat the day of going in that evening,Β afraid toΒ soil the water if it did come of.Β Then I changed if beforeΒ and after to check the security and it was just fine. With my heartΒ SVT, I can only stay in about 10 - 15 min. So I'm not sure that qualifies as tested! 😷😷😷! lol. Liza...are you sure its not yourΒ soap or hair products? I use one kind for myΒ body, then after I shampoo I have another simple soap forΒ over the area my pouch needs to stick to, thenΒ a good rinse of that area to remove any residue the others may have left. It made the difference between sticking and not sticking. Β Linda Great topic! While I'm not in water other than for showers, I do prefer Hollister 2pc systems over appliance mainly because it's so minimal and does what I need it to do. Edge peeling for me is usually only an issue when: a) I've been wearing my appliance for more than 5 days b) The wafer is the thicker kind or "regular wear". But usually, the tape border on the extended wear Hollister wafers holds up nicely.Β @squeakyandliza Have you considered a shower cover? https://www.veganostomy.ca/guide-shower-covers/ Β They can help if you need to keep any wounds or your appliance dry during showers.Β Β More tips for showers here: https://www.veganostomy.ca/showering-ostomy-w-video/ Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. Hi Liza, sounds like some type of residue maybe like Linda suggested? Have you tried using a protective seal on after cleaning the area where the wafer goes? Clean using water only. Eric reviews them. They are wipes or spray. It may help it stick better. Good luck👍 Kevin Kevin Dieffenbach Hi Glenn, definitely give the spray adhesive a try. I use a combination of adhesive removal spray and wipes , but I do like the spray better👍 Kevin Kevin Dieffenbach I'm ordering some now. Β After trying to get this Convatec bag off this morning, I'm ready for something. Β Things REALLY stick well to me, which is of course a good thing, but a little help getting it off would be nice. Β Β Ulcerative Colitis (1995) Okay. Β An update. Β I'd mentioned that I soaked one time in a Convatec bag and it was ready to fall off. Β Well, the wafer was still stuck very well, so I just stuck the tape barrier back down and kept the bag on. Β After 4 days, this morning I removed the bag. Β The heat from the hot tub must have melted the wafer, and it was stuck to me so well that I thought I'd pull my skin off. Β It was like trying to get gum out of your hair. Β It was a moldable 2-piece flange, and those things are very thick. Β It was so gooey I thought I'd never get off. Β I took a long shower afterward and finally got all the residue off. Β I've never had this issue with Hollister. Β And, it's time for me to get some adhesive remover, if for nothing else, to have it on hand for situations like this. Β Ulcerative Colitis (1995) It is ironic Glenn, I have so much trouble getting things to stick to me and I have an abundance of adhesive remover spray. My insurance allows me one small container a month and it lasts longer than that for me. Also every time I saw the ostomy nurse, she used a new can to take off my ostomy and canβt reuse it on someone else so she gave it to me to take home. Iβve started taking my own when I go see her now.Β -Liza Glen...I use the wipes and the sprays. Not so long ago I had a 1st. leak in some time and using the 2 or 3 wipes I was told in hospital would be enough, this was proved wrong on my skin. I used about 10 or 11 that pouch change, spraying adhesive remover on the wipes to make wetter, moving slower, and was reallyΒ amazed at how much more residue I still removed.Β Using both spray & wipeΒ then more wipes and spray forΒ residual residue. I learned quickly that the adhesive theΒ pouch left behind was more then I thought,Β plus prior build up not removed.Β I noticedΒ Β It startedΒ leaving little bits on the wipe in aΒ grey colourΒ behind.Β If you have not tried this, you can actually feel with the wipe andΒ how it slides over your skin once cleaned & all off.Β Use a squareΒ of TP to help hold the pouch coming off as it becomes slippery from the spray at the start. *I learned from Liza (TQ)Β to line upΒ TP I may and usually use before opening a pouch to drain or change. Also if your allowed to order only a certain amount, order every month what you use even if you do not have immediate need for it. This helps build up an emergency supply without looking like a hoarder. Realizing that my leaks were caused by residual build up was eye opening for sure. There was moreΒ residue where the leaks occurred.Β If you do notΒ use the skin barrier wipe or spray I would suggest both of them if you can. It has saved my skin burns from the acid in output a lot. AΒ leak last week reminded me we need to help our newbies with a bit moreΒ thoroughΒ info for their sake. I now use less Barrier wipes because ofΒ spray. Once sprayed on, fan it dry with the back plastic from wafer. I no longer worry about proper coverage with the spray.Β If it's tacky to touch its not dry. Fan more.Β I use about 4-5 short blasts to cover that whole area, checking for coverage dampness in a good light & small mirror. Glossy= wet. I protect my stoma from spray holding a square of TP in front of where I'm spraying,Β I wrap my stoma as Eric suggested in a video on changing the pouch, but I use 3 squares of TP . I also spray some on the wipe and dab around the skin by my stoma for good coverage.Β Test it, spray it on the back of your hand or the inside of your arm and fan it dry.Β Then remove it and see what you use for adhesive remover.Β Β I admit I was surprised at what it took. Treat your arm the same way you do your tummy. Your own private Science class! lol! 🤣🙊😷😷😷 Be Well everyone!Β Β Linda
