Between March 13-16th, 2016 I was able to take my first flight in over 20 years. It was not only my first flight in decades, but it was my first time traveling with an ostomy and as a vegan.
In this post, I’ll be detailing my experience, as well as explain why I was even in South Africa!

I spoke in front of over 150 people (mostly stoma nurses!) about the various phases I went through from diagnosis to recovery. It was so awesome to be up there, and the feedback I’ve received has been so positive.

Not many people know what IBD is at the time of their diagnosis, and I had a lot of questions about Crohn’s Disease when I was first diagnosed, but there are some things that I wish I had known sooner.
Today (May 19th, 2015) marks another World IBD Day. I know that some people see today as a special day for advocacy and as a reason to celebrate, but the past few weeks leading up to today have been full of anxiety, discouragement and upset for me.
The finalists for the 4th Annual WEGO Health Activist Awards have been chosen, and I’ve made it through as one of the “Best Kept Secrets“!
Saying “I’m vegan“, is something which raises as many eyebrows as saying “I’m an ostomate” or “I have Crohn’s Disease“, but I can say it with confidence because living an ethical and compassionate lifestyle can be highly rewarding (and pretty easy).
I had an opportunity to be interviewed live on a special edition of the IBD Round Table, hosted by Frank Garufi Jr. of The Crohn’s and Colitis Effect. There were so many great questions coming from both Frank and the viewers on the live chat, and I had a blast!
