Hi everyone First I am not a vegan I have tried but it is so confusing...Anyway 70 yr old female with 3 bouts of diverticulitis since June 2020.  This fourth one ruptured and the pain was more than childbirth.

I had the Hartman procedure as using lap a scope was not an option with all the discharge inside.  I woke up with the ugliest stoma it looks like a dark hole with uneven edges and no rosebud.  Everyone including doctors say this will be hard to manage.
yesterday back in ER for bleeding on edges of stoma.  The dissolvable sutures were all sitting on top of the side walls with bright red blood.  Told to call Surgeon Mon morning yep if it happens to me it is normally the weekend.

I was not told anything but I could eat a regular diet.  Been home a week after 10 days in hospital and had a tuna sandwich.  I now want to vomit.

food has always been a stressful thing my twin got all the cooking skills.

well wanted to say hi.  This first week at home has been pretty crappy in the most literal sense but I think I have it getting under control.

Welcome to the forum, Gimo. That sounds like a rocky start, but I do hope that experience and guidance will make things easier for you as time goes on.

Do you have access to stoma nurse? Considering that you mentioned that your stoma is less than perfect (many are), it will be important to have that hands-on support.

You'll likely go through various products before finding a combination that works best for you.  Don't be discouraged - this will be a tough step, but a necessary one to find the right products. I'm sure you'll get a lot of different experiences by asking what people use, but you do you.

Please feel free to create new topics with new questions. We're all here to help. 😀

Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate.

Hi Gino, Welcome to the forum. I second what Eric has said. Use the forum to navigate and research. When it comes to doctors never be afraid to voice concerns and ask questions.

Gosh

Why do they always say things like! you can eat a regular diet.

I'm not surprised you were sick on a tuna sandwich.

I'm sure you'll scan the forum and come to realise it will take you a while to fine out what is good and what is not good for you to eat as you heal, it is always different for everybody. Ones that pop up a lot are brassicas, beans and nuts.

You have had major surgery and your intestines have been jiggled about alot it will take a good while for them to settle down. Also you have a steep learning curve of managing a stoma.

welcome to the forum vegan or not

There is some good advice and great people here

Hello Gimo, and welcome to the forums. You have certainly been through a lot; I hope that things are better today.

There is a lot to learn and VO has been of much help and support to me. We are very appreciative of all that Erik has done here, and I enjoy “surfing” around the site.

After my colostomy the doctor told me there were no restrictions on my diet, but I wondered how that could be and was very cautious, adding a small amount of each new food to see how my system tolerated them. I cut things up small and chewed well.

Although my experience was not as challenging as yours, we have a couple things in common - like you I am a 70-year old female (how in the world did we sixties chicks get to be 70?!) and not a vegan.  But I do like tofu!

Best to you,

LL

Gimo...Welcome to VO!! Not a huge confession from me,  but God Bless Eric's great big heart for opening this up to non-vegan as well! Thanks again Eric!! I'm sure I'm not the only one who repeatedly binge watched his most informative videos!

It sounds like your on your way to understanding what's in front of you. Don't be a stranger here ask anything you need an answer to. No question is a dumb question!  I'm 63 & have an Ileostomy since 2009.

I found small frequent meals were best from the start and still eat this way.  I found foods that cause gas...lol, my new word of the day, brassicas, thanks Chris, lol,  gave me serious problems with bloating pain & nausea. Breads are still the greatest offender thanks to yeast  & other rising agents, but with the wide variety of crackers I don't miss them much at all. I just put Tuna & such on a cracker instead of between Bread. Everything in moderation to start.

Take it slow at first, give your guts time to heal & know that food limits are often temporary. All the best!! Stay well!!

To avoid repeating, see if any of my ideas on the forum  "output after eating fibre" will help.

Thank all of you for your responses.  I could not figure how to get back here.  Today has been a bummer.  Last night at 7 pm I put on a new coloplast deep convex bag.  I woke to old blood in bag at least 1 oz which freaked me out n the smell is horrific.  I took a pic and sent it off to my surgeon and way later his nurse told me not to worry about it.  After reading a few posts I am wondering if my new bag is too much for my stoma. ??….??? Remember my stoma is flush with my skin down a hole they used to teaspoon out.  I am now drinking hot tea and still only have scant liquid brown stool I do have a bottle of prune juice I might try otherwise it has to be the new bag shutting things or blocking.

@llholiday I found the reply button.  I never thought I would make it to 70.  And I tell you what I am not suicidal but am pissed that I almost died and they saved me.  I had very mixed emotions about that.
It has been one thing after another for over a year and that doesn’t count the two diseases I got 5 years ago and on high doses of prednisone.  I started off with 2 back to back bouts of diverticulitis then 9 UTI then diverticulitis again then some butcher did a colostomy on me n hemoroids that I have always been ok with decided now was a good time to hang out and bleed etc.  then the tiny leak I must have had for that year exploded and here we are.  I always try to be funny but realize I don’t pull it off great.  Thanks for your response.

@dlkfiretruck hi Linda I am also Linda.  Is there a button to push to get notification of when someone answers?

I would become a vegan except it is so confusing and I hate chickpeas.  I need someone to just simply say eat this for breakfast, lunch dinner etc.  but I only find recipes and that is way out of my comfort level.

I shall try and find your output on fiber.  I am ten years too old for all this stuff.

@gimo Hello also Linda!  Welcome to VO!! Linda is a good name and I feel the same way about electronics.!! Lol!

At the top of a page like this, there's a sentence that says "subscribe for new replies".  This should put replies to your post or others in this column into your mail box so you are notified of answers and to topics your interested in.

You do not have to be a vegan to be here. Eric who owns this site veganostomy, has kindly made it available to every one. We do show respect by keeping our thoughts about it to ourselves and encouraging a good healthy diet to all. That said, I too eat meat, but if we post a recipe its a vegan one.

Your doing well just finding us & we'll help you through what we can if you need us.

Weare here to help new ostomates figure out this path you are now on.  Don't worry about finding certain topics right now. Feel free to ask any questions you like & I & the others will do our best to answer them for you okay....so.. fire away!  Pun unintended!!! lol!

The other Linda
