Love the video being at the top of the page, so easy to see and use. You’ve done it again Eric. Congrats
HI my granddad has a cut on his stoma. Should we just leave it alone or is there something we can do for it?
I’d suggest having a stoma nurse take a look at it. Stomas can sometimes bleed due to impact or friction, but it’s best to get it looked at in case it’s more than a minor break in the tissue.
HI Yes realize you have a different ostomy, I enjoy reading your articles so there must be more urostomy people reading your articles who would
Are there any specific topics that apply to urostomates? Most of the content I create can apply to all types of ostomies, but each type of stoma may have a few specifics that are worth discussing in detail. I’d love to know which topics to start with.
HI. One problem I have you answered last week, if my bag leaks this leaves a residue of stickiness on my skin, this is hard to remove my skin ends up red and sore, so have ordered a remover.
In the Summer it is very hot here so I have problems with my bag tape adhering to the skin.
Most people after having their bladder removed seem to have a hernia, this causes a bulge (seem to think you may have a hernia) my son tells me I am more conscious of this than others. What to wear especially in the heat, yes from the Farmacia you can buy belts which I have tried, hot, ungainly hard to put on, would be good to find something more suitable.
I am not sure if you have the same problem but I never know when my bag will leak which can be embarrassing, I change usually every 2 days, but has leaked after one and if staying in can go without leaks for 3 days.
After showering when putting a new bag on I lie on the bed with my hand on the bag so the tape can adhere I hope.
Hope this is of interest to you.
Lots of things to cover, but I have several suggestion. It’s not ideal to converse through this comment section, but I would invite you to post these questions/concerns on my community forum and I’ll be happy to explore option. https://www.veganostomy.ca/community/
Hello, you talk about, putting your hand over your bag. I wet a wash cloth, put it in a zip plastic bag, then hear it in the microwave for 10-12 seconds, the hold it on my bag til it gets cold. This works for me. My stoma nurse, for me doing this.
HI Janice. That sounds like a good idea will try, when first having my stoma I used to lie on the bed for 15 minutes but found 5 was enough, not sure about you but find easier to apply my bag lying down. Thank you for replying, 2 scans tomorrow and one Wednesday. Just hope good news. Love
Jess, as a word of caution. When you lie down and apply your wafer the skin under your wafer may be too “relaxed” so when you stand up your skin stretches a little and that may cause it to tear. If you notice the skin around the edges of your wafer are sore or raw, that is what could be happening.
HI That could be the problem, next time I change my bag I will do it standing. The skin becomes sore by my trying to scrape off the sticky residue left by the tape, but only if my bag has leaked. Thank you for advice.
Hi Janice, yes I’ve heard of others doing something similar. That’s fine, as long as it’s not too hot (I’ve heard of accidental burns too). Lately, I put my wafer on the heating vent for about 10 seconds and that’s gets the adhesive nice and warm 😀
HI This sounds maybe a better option thank you will try. Take it you mean the central heating vent, not sure if it would work with my bag although
Yes, a central heater not a baseboard heater!
Good not sure what a baseboard heater is, living her in Spain we have basic
A baseboard heater is long and attaches to where the floor meets the wall (usually one in every room). It generates heat by heating coils inside of it – it can get very hot and melt a wafer. Only do it if you have central heating with forced air vents (on the floor).
Of course, you don’t have to do this at all and you may simply heat up the wafer in between your hands :) It’s totally up to you!
Hi, We have nothing like that here I just have independent electric heaters as well as one calor gas heater think we are a little backward here n Spain, properties built for the hot weather with higher ceilings, thank you for the info. Jess
I have a dip in my flesh close to my navel, because of this my wafer doesn’t seal well and often comes loose in this area. How can i remedy this?
I suggest having a stoma nurse take a look. For dips, the usual product to remedy this would be stoma paste or a barrier ring. You may also be asked to use a convex wafer, but it really depends on a few factors. Good luck!
HI I ALWAYS FIND YOUR ARTICLES MOST INTERESTING, I DO USE HOLLISTER BAGS, BUT IT IS My BLADDER THAT WAS REMOVED SO TOTALLY DIFFERENT TO WHAT YOU USE. IS THERE ANYWAY YOU COULD START A BLOG ON MY CONDITION. DID PAY OVER 100$ ON SMALL BAGS TO I HOPED SOAK UP URINE, WHAT DID IT DO BLOCK MY TOILET !!!!!!!! Gave them to a friend with an ostomy bag not sure I would recommend.
I had my bladder removed here in Spain just over 4 years ago.
Wishing you continued good health.
Regards Jess.
Hi Jess,
I’m hoping to have more content that is specific for urostomates in the future. Since I don’t have a urostomy, it’s impossible for me to speak based on first-hand experience, which is why I don’t have any targeted articles for people like you :(
