Good morning everybody . I am looking for some tips or tricks on dealing with heat . It can get pretty hot here where I live temps can get from 100 to 120+ humidity can vary . Last summer was my first real summer with my Ostomy . I had problems with severe painful  irritation under my wafer . I know the best answer would be to stay inside (obviously) Haha where there is A/C but I can't stay inside all summer . So my question is does anybody have any Tips or Tricks on how to deal with heat and high temps ? Proctectomy , Ileostomy , Ulcerative Colitis Last summer was my first real summer with my Ostomy . I had problems with severe painful  irritation under my wafer . Does it look like the irritation is being caused by inflamed hair follicles? If so, I had a very similar experience and my solution was to tweeze and epilate the hair under my wafer - hasn't been a problem since! I have some more tips in this article, but I hope that other members who live in warmer climates can share their strategies :) Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. This may sound strange, but I had less trouble in warmer weather last summer than I've had in the cold, dry winter months. I'll be going into my second summer with mine as well, it remains to be seen whether or not that will stay the same for me. UC since 2002, subtotal colectomy Dec. 2016, proctolectomy Nov. 2018. Hi Robert, yes hot summers, I remember we had one of those when I was a child!! No but seriously on the few hot days we get here I will change a little more often and wear loose T shirts. Some baby powder under the pouch keeps it feeling dry. I started this back in the day when my pouches had no weave on the bag! Some wafers do better with heat than others, I know for a fact my convtec don,t like heat! ileostomy 31st August 1994 for Crohns I have heard that doctors in the old days doctors would tell their sick patients to move to a dryer warmer climate. Perhaps they should be giving you the advice to move to a colder winter climate and then it would stick all the time. Just kidding😃 Severe rheumatoid arthritis, spondoloarthropy, polymyalgia rhumatica, type 1 diabetic, IBS and finally, emergency diverticulitis surgery, colon removed Stella born Jan. 27, 2017. 6 bouts of c-diff, failed fecal transplant. Complete colonectomy and ileostomy July 30, 2018. ENOUGH!! This may sound strange, but I had less trouble in warmer weather last summer than I've had in the cold, dry winter months. I'll be going into my second summer with mine as well, it remains to be seen whether or not that will stay the same for me. Not strange at all. When I visit hot places, my appliance sticks amazingly well! Almost too well! But I think it can depend on whether you sweat a lot and whether your sweat is "oily" or not. Many people have adhesion issues with their appliance because of that. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. Hey All and thanks for the reply's . Eric I am not having a problem yet this year but the heat will soon be here this just kinda getting ready for it . I do remember you talking about using the tweezers and the Epilate thing . I just shave every other time I change the wafer and that seems to be doing ok . I was just thinking if I started getting irritated again I would have some ideas ready to try . BTW I had not seen that article thank you . Sasquatch it's going to be interesting for both of us this summer . We don't have really cold cold winters here so luckily I haven't had trouble in the winter . John ye gave me a laugh Lad with the we had one of those when you were a child ... I use Hollister and didn't have a problem with it staying on only with the sore n irritation underneath . But I like the baby powder idea especially since I now wear a wrap I will try that for sure . Barbara thanks for the moving advice but I guess I'm a desert Rat I can't take all that cold .. Lol Proctectomy , Ileostomy , Ulcerative Colitis Hi Robert, Maybe a sweatband for your belly? Just kidding. The baby powder might really help. It would keep that area dryer anyway. I wonder if putting the baby powder on top of the wafer  would help. Might be worth a try if you are staying close to home one day . Eric, tweezers sound painful! OUCH.  Onset of severe Ulcerative Colitus Oct.2012. Subtotal colectomy with illiostomy July 2015; Peristomal hernia repair ( Sugarbaker, mesh, laparoscopic) May 2017. I tried powders.. even corn starch, it works it way into the wafer...... I too have issues in the summer.. But now I know more from this blog, I hope, I myself have leaned something on this subject. Mostly, take it easy during the humid hot weather.. IF that ever show up here in New England!!  Considering, plastic and sweating and the heat, not a great mixture is it?? We do have our wars don't we?? Good Luck!! 2014 - 3 strangulations of colon, Ulcerative colitis, removal of colon, illiostomcy named woooh Nellie.. Marcie did it loosen up your wafer ? I use Nystop powder (prescription) under mine now . Dona yes maybe a belly sweatband Haha . JK . I do wear a wrap so that's probably going to be about the same Lol but I think I will try the powder all over . We'll see what happens ..... Proctectomy , Ileostomy , Ulcerative Colitis Yes Robert, it did get under the wafers edges which = an earlier change.. and got loose. But ven for a short term use, staying at home to monitor it, it helped a bit..  This Nystop powder? Which Dr. prescribed this for you? Have u used this before? Let us know!! Very interested!!!!!!!!!! You could have found something here !! I don't see your rosebud pin on your cap yet........... :-)  2014 - 3 strangulations of colon, Ulcerative colitis, removal of colon, illiostomcy named woooh Nellie.. Marcie my surgeon prescribed the Nystop powder for me last summer when I was having such a problem  I have used it since and haven't had a problem but summer is coming again ... Last summer I didn't get out a lot yet but this summer I hope to . When my irritation was really bad I was also told to try Marathon skin protectant along with the powder . The Marathon really made a difference but is expensive .
