Hi, I'm posting this as a (sson to be) newbie ostomate. I've been vegan since 2018, and am wondering how to deal with non-vegan recommendations from an ostomy nurse. Does it matter to you if your appliance is vegan? Would you settle for a vegan appliance that doesn't work as well as a non vegan one? Avoiding animal products is very important to me, but is there a point where it's acceptable to use non vegan products because they might work best? Not sure how to navigate this. I'll be having an appointment with a stoma nurse in June and I doubt he or she will be knowledgable about which ostomy products are vegan or not. I have a hard time using the appliance list, because the product names are different then the ones used on the websites of my country's appliance manufacturers. I'd appreciate any input! Incontinent in a better way, since 12 July 2023 This is a great topic, and a wonderful question that I think every vegan is faced with at some point. My general philosophy when it comes to medication, medical supplies, or medical procedures is to make use of vegan-alternatives if they are available, but I would use a non-vegan medication/supply/procedure if no other options were available. I wouldn't want anyone to struggle with a non-working vegan product if a working non-vegan product would improve their quality of life. It's great that you're aware enough to give this problem some pause to think about. Do you have any examples of the products available to you? If it's not something already on my list, perhaps I can point you in the right direction. You can always contact the manufacturer to ask. They are more than happy to find out 👍  Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. @veganostomy Thank you for your quick reply and your thoughts, I really appreciate it. We have most of the brands on your list, like Convatec, Hollister BBraun and Coloplast. I couldn't find Dansac on your list, but they don't seem to be available in Canada or the US so that makes sense. I might email them myself to see if and which of their products are vegan. So I looked at the Hollister products on your list. I'm not sure if the New Image line on your list is the same as the Confirm line on their Dutch website. My google search of Hollister New Image came up empty. And they don't mention the product codes either. But as far as I can tell from your list, their moldable wafers all seem to be vegan. I've understood that most stoma nurses love the moldable wafers, because they're so easy to use. Coloplast seems to name their lines consistently across the world. If I look on the website of my medical supplier, it gets even more confusing, because they don't always list the brand names. Just the product lines and no product codes. Probably has to do with the ban on medical advertising or something *sigh*. I might try to call them and see if they have any info on which products are animal-free, though I'm not expecting much. What's in Coloplast's Sensura Mio line that makes it non vegan? Incontinent in a better way, since 12 July 2023 @cat-momma I had a look at the Hollister Conform line and they do match up with the New Image line we have here. The only one that I'd think is not vegan would be the "SoftFlex", but everything else seems to match the wafers we use, just named slightly different. 99% of the time, it's something in the adhesive which makes it non-vegan. Usually, gelatin. Some brands have already phased gelatin out and replaced it with vegan-friendly alternatives 👌 Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. @veganostomy Ah, that's great to know, thank you! Hopefully I'll get along with the Hollister products :) I am still very curious about the Dansac products as well, so I think I'll shoot them an email. What are good questions to ask about their products? Just if they use any animal products? Or do you ask more specific questions? Incontinent in a better way, since 12 July 2023 What are good questions to ask about their products? Just if they use any animal products? That's all I ask, unless I need other specifics, and most manufacturers provide those details in a reasonable amount of time. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate.
