Hi everyone,

We are gearing up here in Northern VT for a whopper of a storm (or so they say). Supposedly, we will be getting up to 18 inches of the white stuff over the course of two days. Despite my nonchalance, we are still prepared. We have a wood cookstove incase the power goes off, and a new wood stove in the cellar, which keeps things warm in the basement and on the first floor. We also have gravity fed water as well (no pun intended!).

I plan to get out on my snowshoes when it's all over. Snowshoeing is my sport of choice during the winter, as I am less likely to fall. (You DON'T want to see me on skis! I'm truly pathetic!!!) Though, breaking new trail after a snow is still tough, especially on this older body of mine.

Are there any out there who do winter sports? What is your pleasure?

Stella

Hi Stella, Over here we never really get that much snow any more. Thursday morning we got a light dusting which lasted for an hour. Do remember using plastic fertiliser bags (which are quite large) as a child to slide down hills? be sure and leave a torch handy for yer supplies just in case you need them during a power cut. Yer stay warm

I just came back from shoveling our driveway - definitely the most snow we've had this season, but nowhere near 18 inches! Yikes!!

Hmmm, we are over 130 inches now.   I've got over 140miles on the skate skis this season, hoping to break 500miles this season.

Hi folks,

We got only 14" of the white stuff, but it has been so dang cold, I haven't been able to go snowshoeing. We've had night time temps around negative 13 degrees fahrenheit and day time temps didn't get above -4. Wind chill temps were around -25 to -35 below. The temperature is supposed to go up to the 30s by tonight with rain expected tonight through tomorrow. EGADS! Snow I can deal with, but rain in the winter is a bummer! Oh well, this way I can get to some of my winter sewing projects and card making.

God bless!

Want to trade? =)

We were lucky all winter, but the snow we've had in the last two weeks more than makes up for any we missed in the previous several months. I'm really looking forward to warmer weather!

The cold weather is causing problems in our house. My wife has bought this huge fake fur blanket for the bed, it’s weights a ton and it’s too warm!!! We look like we should be in an igloo. I would threaten “me or the blanket “ but I know who would win ?

YES, it is so cold.  Got it fast-- below 0 here in Ct. Thing is u don't feel it until it is to late. KEEP YOUR KIDS IN.. The car takes longer to heat up within its engine and I find the breaks don't work well either when I venture out for my early infusions.  Never  experienced  this before.  NOW I KNOW ! 72 hours from now it will bein the 50's..  FLU WEATHER !!!!!!

Linda,

BRRR - that beats us! Things have quieted down and warmed up. I was able to go snowshoeing at least three times last week. It's now 23 degrees F here - much warmer, but in the next couple of days, we are expecting rain.(Yuck, I'd much rather have snow this time of year!)

John, I understand where your wife is coming from - I'm no heater and need the extra warmth at night. Does it really get that cold where you're from? I always thought of Ireland as being damp but not too chilly - I guess everything is relative to one's situation.

Take care all!

Stella

Forget the snow - today it's freezing rain! This is why I never complain about the summer!

In northern Minnesota we had more than 36” of snow in February. Our driveway looks like a tunnel, 5-6-foot high snow bank in each side. We had to pay somebody to shovel off the roof of the house and melt off some of the ice dams. Ready for a spring thaw!

I love the smell of coffee in the morning. It smells like .... victory.

I really enjoyed reading everyones stories and temps. and what we do in the cold freezing chill of winter. I also take the time to tackle hobbies or crafts and bake. Things I may not have had a chance to complete before Christmas. I get cold quickly in winter and I wear two pairs of thermal socks on my feet all the time, even at night. I will double up on the clothes going out to take Romeo to tinkle, and I wear  hats as well. Usually a toque and as of late also a hoodie hat.  My glasses steam up when coming in and as I have gotten older I can barely tolerate the minus temps especially with a wind chill factor in the mix. We have had a lot of minus 11c temps this winter and am glad to be in a home where the widows do not freeze over causing Jack Frost to sneak around decorating them. I wrote a childrens poem about this a long time ago and won an award for it. Winter will do that for me.  As a kid, we would spend hours in the snow. One year my Dad took the bulldozer out to check all the fluids and he removed the snow from the driveway and made a great big pile of it in the front yard of our two story home. It was wide enough to stretch safely down the line of us five kids. Then he would let us climb in the bucket and he would raise us up to the roof top where we would take a leap of faith and trust and leap all at once into the pile of snow.  This was repeated often in one day. To this day my Dad says he does not like the snow, yet he always made sure us kids had fun outside in winter. It started with ice skating at a local arena and a  place called Frys Corner. A field over taken by weeds and lots of thick ice, Never deep enough to get lost in the field if we broke the ice. Mom always joined us and she and Dad were pretty great skaters. We all had new skates from the thrift shop that first year, and eventually were gifted brand new ones as we proved our selves on the ice.  Skating was every single Saturday. As we got older most of us took up snow skiing and I believe all the water skiing we did in summer credited to our balance on the slopes. I have seen the snow piled so high on the road going up Silver Star mountain in Vernon B.C., about four hours from here. (try google earth. I am sure you will see it for yourself) Snow can be easily 12 feet high or more on the driveways. I love the blanket of  quietness that the snow brings around us when taking a walk outside. The diamonds glistening in the snow on a sunny morning, always wakes up my childhood imag-ination.  The same pond in our neighborhood that we would go and collect frogs and tadpoles in in summer would also freeze up so it kept us busy in  the week with more skating. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

Linda

Wow, Linda, lots of good memories. We here in Vermont are getting a lot of frigid temps. Zero or below at nights and no more than 15 - 19 degrees fahrenheit during the day. I must admit, I'm beginning to long for spring, but usually, that doesn't come till mid to late May around here. However, I am keeping busy with my crafts and jigsaw puzzles and am enjoying having my granddaughter over twice a week. I am also back to doing my yoga - a modified version, but it works!

Today, I might do a snowshoe as I am taking care of my daughter's dog for the day, which means I have two dogs to accompany me.  We'll see as the snow is deep and both dogs may have trouble walking through it.

Happy Winter!

Stella
