When I started this post, I didn't realize there would be so many responses! Thanksgiving here is November 28 this year. I am not sure if we'll be heading for NY this year or not. My children usually go to their in-laws, so we miss out having them, but we usually get them on Christmas day and New Years, so I can't complain. Whenever we go to my brother's, I will bring a pie or bread or something edible. We usually have turkey, mashed potatoes, yams, green beans, cranberry sauce and a whole lot of desserts! We normally just sit around and talk and enjoy his grandkids along with my nieces and their hubbies. My cousin and his wife and their adult children also join us. Pie is the order of the day. My sister-in-law or her sister make sugar pie, which is pecan pie sans the pecans. My husband loves it! Personally, I do not like an overly sweet pie. So, if I do make one, it's usually an apple pie. (See post from Oct. 4) Stella Stella-I guess you stumbled onto the fact that we are a pie-loving group. ? It is great that Eric set up this lounge so we can take a break from the ostomy talk now and then and have fun discussions like this one. I love pecans, but have never liked pecan pie, so I think I would agree with you about the sugar pie, and would also opt for another choice. -Liza Brian...I would love that recipe. My son does so many little things for me. I love to make something he really enjoys here and there and surprise him with it for a thank you. His fav. ice cream is Oreo Cookie, so I think this would be the perfect thank you. Maybe talk nice to your sister for me...please. FYI...you can buy a box mix of lemon merangue and it turns out just as ell. The times I cheated, my dad had no clue! You have to use your own egg whites for the merangue, but it is pretty simple to make. If you can't handle the pastry part, buy a premade graham cracker crust and use that instead, or buy the frozen pastry and use that. I know they come pre-rolled and all you have to do is put them in the plate and trim the edges. It has to be difficult in such a world directed at sighted when it comes to things like grocery shopping...I can't imagine! These recipes sound so good Liza. Angel oie sounds a lot like Pavlova. It is a meragnue like that only with fresh fruit on top and served with whip cream. Sugar pie sounds sweeter than Butter tarts but along the same line. Butter tarts are traditionally made with currents but I don't like the seeds so I use chopped raisins and I always use the Sun Maid Brand. The lady on the bag was the great great grandmother of a friend of ours, of all things. They are the best ever raisins in my books and so worth the extra cost. It is not as much sweet in one serving as a piece of pie. Great topic Stella! Linda For those looking to veganize these recipes, consider using egg replacements: https://www.peta.org/living/food/vegan-egg-replacer-guide/ We tend to use ground flax, but other substitutes work well depending on what you're trying to bake. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. Eric, Are there substitutes for eggs that do not have soy? I know I can't have anything with plain soy in it (unless it is fermented soy) as it affected my thyroid in the past. (I lost a great deal of weight, had heart palpitations, and was constantly tense. Once I stopped eating and drinking soy, my weight returned to normal, the heart palpitations stopped, and I felt less tension - this took 3 months after stopping my intake.) Also, I read a study that shows that soy without fermentation affects the entire endocrine system. I believe I found the study on westonaprice.org. What are your thoughts? Stella Eric, thank you for such great information. I have had firm tofu before many times and really enjoy it. I have had it made into patties on and off a bun and loved that too. I was able to buy a nice big pack the other day and because my eyes are doing the thing they do, searching the net is not much fun. So, I am going to ask what is your fav. Things to do with tofu. What firmness do you prefer? And how do you like the ones that are soft and do you do anything with them in regards to a deserts? Inquiring minds want to know...lol! Linda Are there substitutes for eggs that do not have soy? Most of them aren't soy-based. Ground-up flaxseed in water works amazingly well, so that's what we tend to use. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. So, I am going to ask what is your fav. Things to do with tofu. What firmness do you prefer? And how do you like the ones that are soft and do you do anything with them in regards to a deserts? To be honest, our tofu consumption at home has gone way down over the last year or two. We used to get 400g blocks from $0.50 to $0.75 not too long ago, and now the average price for the same block is $2-$2.50, so we've moved on! LOL My preference is firm or extra firm. I always squeeze out as much water as I can from the blocks before cooking them. The silken (really soft type) can be used in desserts, but we never really use it. The medium type can be blended for various sauces, dips, creams, etc. We do anything from grilling, stir fry, adding cubes to our rice one-pot, air fry thin slices for use in sandwiches, etc. Here's something to try: freeze a block of tofu and then cook it after thawing. The texture changes considerably and it ends up being more spongy and easier to use in things like stirfry. Tofu doesn't really taste like anything, so squeezing the water out and then marinating it will help to add whatever flavor you like. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. Thanks, Eric. Always good info in case a vegan friend comes over. I always like to accommodate when people have special diets and like to try new things as well. Stella Happy Thanksgiving Eric, Linda, and all our other Canadian ostomates!! May you all have lovely days, spent with family and friends. And of course, pie. ? -Liza Liza, thank you so much. We had a really nice time and I had spent some time on Saturday with the 2 oldest grands making Caramel Popcorn. They said they had no idea 1 c. of kernels could make so much popcorn! We had a really fun time together! We started Thanksgiving earlier this year, playing games all afternoon with horderve type foods and crackers, then dinner, and pies. Everything was prepped and ready to cook the day before. My son did all the day of cooking & we had shared in the preparations. Everyone was feeling so lazy and relaxed all morning & when the kids asked if they had to change just to come upstairs, we decided to humour them a little! So, we did the whole day with all of us in our PJs. So...when in Rome... wear your pajamas! lol! They thought it was just great to do this. About 7 p.m., they went down to watch a movie and due to not sleeping much at all, in 4 nights, I turned in for the night. I rested lots, but got about five hours of broken sleep. It was a very nice day & weekend, pjs & all. Fellow Canadians or anyone celebrating thanksgiving...Please tell us how yours went & if you did anything "different" this year. Liza, yours is next I think. Linda Sounds like a great day, Linda. Thanksgiving in jammies sounds so relaxing!! I’m glad you had good family time, especially playing games with the grandkids!! -Liza I was driving to an appt this morning and was thinking it was a perfect fall day. It was a bright day, with scattered clouds - not rain clouds. The temp was in the 40s but with some sun shining through, so it didn’t feel overly cold. We have been below freezing several times this year already, so the 40s felt nice. The trees are such beautiful colors right now and the leaves are falling. -Liza last night was 12F, we had 3 inches of snow on top of a foot so far this season. i reluctantly went skiing today with a friend in windy 17F conditions, after I warmed up, i was glad I went. It’s 6F right now - brr - we have just a little snow. Early winter weather this fall.❄️ Colostomy 4/30/18. Brr. Where are you guys that you have snow already? I’ve always preferred cold weather over hot weather, but since my ostomy surgery, I don’t tolerate the cold as well as I used to. -Liza I am in northern Minnesota, where cold and snow are not unusual in early November, but this is unusually cold even for this time of year. Here is a sort of funny cold weather hack for ostomates - last winter I bought some StomaCloaks for noise and odor when I feel a need for extra security. What I found was that on very cold days they actually made me feel warmer! They are made of a thin fleecy fabric (a little bulky but a good product) and it felt sort of like wearing long-johns. Laugh if you want! ps The fabric is breathable, so it doesn’t feel hot in warm weather. Colostomy 4/30/18. Now we all have a mental picture in our head ?? ileostomy 31st August 1994 for Crohns @llholiday...isn't Minnesota where the Little House On The Prairie Books and show are out of? I had the set of books growing up and loved them. Please, correct me if I am wrong tho. Laura, haha, was just on the cooking show, The Kitchen, the other day. She has written a biography and included little house recipes in it. We have had freezing temps here for a few weeks already and surrounding mountains, some, have snow caps on them. You can see the frost on the trees of the lower ones in the a.m. I like it when the grass is crunchy under my feet! I like the snow especially because with my bad eyesight, I can see the actual design of snowflakes without a magnifying glass. They are all impressive, but one in particular had like layered "flat slats" as its design. I saw several like it that day but different in there own way. It is so amazing to see snow falling from the sky, especially under street lamps, to be able to actually see them without a magnifying glass...left me totally impressed with God once again! Linda
