Not sure where else to ask such a question, I'm just over 3 weeks post-op from APR surgery. After surgery going pee was a real struggle starting and stopping, as time has past it almost feels like its 80% back to normal but stopping still feels like I don't have the same muscle strength in that realm that I had pre-op....just curious is this anyone else's experience as well ? Is it because they remove my anus and all the sphincter muscles that I no longer have access to use ? I'll definitely be asking the surgeon when I see him for my follow up in 3 more weeks.

I had similar issues shortly after surgery and it sometimes felt as if peeing abruptly stopped, followed by pain. From what I recall, it didn't last too long and it was considered "normal" at the time.

This should definitely be discussed during your follow-up appointment, especially if it hasn't gotten better by then.

I've had odd functionality since surgery.  but since things have not really changed in years,  I just take it as the new normal as it started right away.  no reason for more surgery that can disrupt something else.   sometimes its sounds like I am milking a cow.  i can pee in the morning, then 5minutes later pee the same amount.  can happen after a nap, so I assume something to do with lying down, surgery, radiation.  everything seems more normal during the day.

25 days after surgery. I have pretty much full control back again. Experienced similar issues as you. Took a while to get that muscle control back that allows you to force out the last squirt or two, or firmly shut off the flow at will.

Why?

Five and half months already after my surgery.  I still on urine catheter and cannot pee by myself. My surgeon said he never seen my case like this in all his career life. The urologist said hope it's just need time to recover. I really worry at this point. And don't know what's the next step.

I'm still on chemotherapy due to my cancer. My surgery was to remove the tumor in somewhere of rectum.

Are you on a Foley Catheter or using a hand held device? I was using a Foley for at least a month after surgery. My surgeon tried to get me off without success. Finally, I went to a urologist who was astounded that I was still using it. She blamed the Foley for all my infections and within three months of using the hand held catheter, I was back to urinating on my own. Maybe you should be getting a second opinion on this.

Good luck,

Stella

What you have described is what a Foley catheter is. It's a hose connected to a bag that allows you to pass urine. A hand held catheter is a small tube like device that you yourself insert into your urethra to empty your bladder into the toilet. If you don't have the urge, you have to make sure you do this every 2-4 hours. The urologist would show you how this is done. I hope this better explains things.

@sjlovestosing Stella, I still have no luck to pee by myself. The urologist did give me try the Clean intermittent self-catheterization. I did everything right but just no pee or little came out when I did it at home by myself. I'm not sure did I set up things right and was I in right position. Because in the hospital, I did it on the bed with the front part of the bed up. This position I could do it. But when I did it at home sitting on toilet or kneeling in the bath tub, I couldn't. Further, I felt pain while inserting the tube and saw some tiny little blood drop on the tube. Ended I couldn't empty my bladder and needed to go to emergency because my bladder was full.

The urologist still having nurse to teach me. And they will have a dynamic test on me next month. I was quite depress with this urine issue. Hope it will be resolved.

I am all too familiar with this problem. Just want to urologist again after having a catheter in for two weeks was able to pee a little for about 60 seconds but a small urine flow then went home for an hour trying to P again for about 40 seconds a small urine flow but not enough to empty the bladder probably got out about 15% to 20% of the amount saline they pumped in.. So now I have the Foley catheter again for a month they say this is normal my butt still feels on fire, been using aquaphor baby ointment per surgeon.  Using leg bag is so much easier during day, but at night have big bag.  I plug up catheter to take shower, much easier without tubes in shower.  Can’t believe I am saying this, but life would be so much better if all I had to deal with was ostomy bag!?

I am so sorry to hear of your troubles. I hope your urologist will be able to get things moving along for you. I'll say a prayer for you.

I hope things will clear up for you as well. I was on the Foley for about a month before my urologist got me off of it. I used a hand held catheter for about two or three months before things were back to "normal". I still have to bear down a little before I can urinate, but at least I am able to do so.

@sjlovestosing Thanks Stella.  Today the urologist put me back on the self-catheterization. I'm at home. One time in the afternoon urine came out . Now none again, using the self-catheter.  Worrying I may need to go to emergency again.

i wishi could try this, but it is very uncomfortable when they insert the foley.  I can’t imagine doing this to myself 7 times a day, and even in middle of night, but easier for women then men due to shorter urethra.

You are absolutely right. It doesn't look comfortable for men at all.

How long did you wait between bathroom breaks? Usually 4 hours is the limit when self-catheterizing.

Due to lack of absorption of water thru my missing colon, I drink more to make up for it and tend to urinate every couple of hours.

@sjlovestosing Stella, I go when I feel I need to go. Today I went 5 times (self catheterization )already, and will go one more time before bed (soon). I can pass urine by myself a little, but cannot all comes out, therefore its very uncomfortable. And a full bladder made me sick 2 times already and ended in emergency.

The last time I did self catheterization today was 2 hours ago . I found a position , and quite much urine came out and felt comfortable. I think it's really need to try . It's scary because I saw little blood came. But the doctor and nurse said little is ok. They keep encourage me to be brave and try. I Hope this urine issue can be resolved.
