I have a very large hiatal hernia and a large and getting larger parastomal hernia and will be having surgery on each, the hiatal sometime this fall and the parastomal a few months after that recovery. The parastomal is bothering me more, but both surgeons recommend fixing the hiatal first, as a previous parastomal surgery can make things more complicated and difficult. As it is, the number of abdomal surgeries I have had isn’t going to make their job any easier.

Not feeling great. Over the past year I have adusted what, how often, and what quantities I eat, and am taking metamucil and/or miralax every day, which is generally working. I have lost a few pounds that I should have, anyway. The parastomal hernia is tender; the PA in Digestive Health doesn’t think a hernia belt would do much good. She advises holding onto my abdomen when I cough.

I am surprised at how many and how extensive tests and preparations are for hiatal hernia surgery.

Has anyone had to have these two surgeries?

I had a fistulotomy a month and a half ago. They said it was about 30% chance of it being successful. The fistula end is right at my rectum so I had a seton ring that had to be replaced every 6 months. Last time I had it replaced the PA said I had a lot of granulation around my rectum and they wanted to clean it up and possibly repair the fistula.
The surgery went okay. Painful recovery, of course. I went in for a follow up about 2 weeks later. The PA probed around to see if it was healing and told me to come back in 3 weeks. I went back last Thursday. She probed around and said the wound was still really deep but not infected. Then she said she was going to treat it with silver nitrate. I don’t know how many of you have had silver nitrate sticks used on you. My ostomy nurse uses them to burn granulomas off around my stoma. Yes, I said burn. The ostomy nurse uses liquid lidocaine poured over the area to numb it first. The PA at the surgeons did nothing to numb me before sticking the silver nitrate sticks into the wound in my butt!! So very very painful!! And I gave to go back in 2 weeks to do it again. If this thing doesn’t close after all that, I may cry.
Just a little story for anyone feeling sorry about what they are going through. 😊

Well it happened after 2 hospital stays within 6 weeks the third one proved profetic. On Monday my stoma was over 7” in length and black and only after 24 hours of my stoma getting enflammed it had to be removed. So here I am sitting in the hospital recovering from that at Pasqua hospital in Regina. While my surgery to fix my underlying issue gets pushed back !!

Had surgery almost 4 weeks ago to convert continent ileostomy to end ileostomy which left incision wound (3rd time cut there), old continent stoma wound, and new stoma for end ileo. 2 weeks ago got incision infection and was put on wound vac for incision and old stoma wound which is directly below new stoma, both which have to heal from inside out. Wound nurse comes 3x/week but will be on vacation for week+ after today and I am stressed. After wound wounds and ostomy bag changes, I have leaks, sometimes the same day, next day, couple of days. When I try to change the bag, I compromise the wound dressing and stool gets into my old stoma wound and wound vac machine goes beserk with its leak alerts. My nurse has been able to come to clean/workaround until next appt, but am worried while he is gone, I won't get the help as quickly if stool comes into contact with the wound. I am guessing because my new stoma is so close to the old stoma wound and the ostomy bag can't make contact with skin, it leaks because it has to be attached to the wound vac clear taping. Is there anything else I can try? Convatec is sending more samples to try and they put me in contact with their ostomy nurse. Thank you in advance.

I was able to reschedule for my hernia repair on Monday June 6, and it went ahead. I am still sore and tired, but relieved that I was able to get it done.

I have eight (8!) small incisions in my poor belly - I look like a sieve. My surgeon apologized, but explained that because I had requested biological mesh, which is much thicker than synthetic, it can’t be tacked in the usual way. It’s too thick for the tacks that are typically used. So she had to suture the mesh to the muscle in 8 different spots. Most of the incisions (“it’s only a flesh wound “) feel okay now. Most of the discomfort is directly beneath the ostomy, where she would have sutured the opening to a much smaller size, and then sutured the mesh, as I mentioned. I was able to walk around the hospital hallway the next day, but I can’t say it was fun. I’m much better now. Although my belly is swollen and tender, the hard lump that was my hernia is gone. And for that, I am very grateful.

I am wearing a hernia support belt, a binder, really, that I ordered from Vanilla Blush in Glasgow, and I absolutely love it. There is no hole for the ostomy, so it might not be right for everyone, but right now, I really appreciate the snug and secure feeling it gives my belly. There’s nothing like abdominal surgery to make you worry that your innards are going to spill out onto the floor - I know it won’t happen, but it’s hard to shake that feeling. The support belt just gives me that extra feeling of security. It’s adjustable,(Velcro) so I can decide how tight I want it.

Hi All!!!

First I would thank all of you, you were the place I would run for when I was having a breakdown because of my ileostomy.

Today I came to present my problem in the right place and I know that I will find good answers as usual.
I had an ileostomy reversal more than one year ago and all is good now in a matter of health, but in the matter of beauty things look out of control a little bit 😹.

When I had my reversal surgery they surprisingly closed all the place where my stoma was and I knew it may cause infection because I’ve seen many people on YouTube talk about their closure and their doctors left a spot open in their stoma place, but mine was fully closed. After a few days mine got infected 😫 and they had to reopen it and cleaned it and then they left it open to close it self and what a surprise it did close itself.

Now after a more than one year as I said I'm all good but I don’t feel confident at all with this hole in my abdomen :( , it looks very ugly and I can't look at it I feel angry and depressed. I'm asking if you know any tips that will make it better or a surgery to fix it it would be great for me and my confidant.

Thank you all!!
