I received an email from a gentleman who was having difficulties wearing pants with a shirt tucked in because their stoma was at the belt line. They said that stoma guards sometimes work, but they result in pancaking and don't stay in place.

Here was my reply, but I'm hoping that others can chime in with suggestions that have worked for them.

Having a stoma at the belt line is certainly challenging!

I have a guide to men's clothing here: https://www.veganostomy.ca/dressing-with-an-ostomy-clothing-guide-for-men/

In your specific situation, I would consider any of the following options to see if works better than the stoma guard:

- High-waisted pants.

- Suspenders.

- (If comfortable) Pants that have elastic bands that gently expand when needed.

I used to wear stoma guards whenever I had to tuck my shirt into my pants but also found that it was hit-and-miss.  Currently, I wear my bag sideways using a support belt, and that allows my belt to go just below my stoma and avoids problems.

Hi ALL, This clothes issue is how I came across Veganostomy, I have in the last few days found a few companies who stock high waist trousers. Slaters, Craghoppers, and Clifford James. Also one for the ladies which is called Seventh Demim who state on their site will be looking after the lads in the near furture. The only Stoma Guard I have experience of is the Stoma Protector, it does stay in place and will stop pancaking and allow for a lower rise trouser to be bag friendly. On the minus side it is bulky and needs a waist band/wrap to hold in place. Eric has covered this product on his reviews of guards. Plus for any one in a wheelchair have a look at a company called Able 2 Wear who have some very clever ideas for over coming added restrictions

I remember seeing somewhere that someone had a way of adding an elastic panel in the waistband where the stoma is, cutting away the waistband and finishing it w fabric. I'll poke around and see if I can find it.

And I see an example in the ladies section of Dressing with an Ostomy, Part 2. She had the zipper and buttons removed and an elastic panel put in.

Tip for ladies of an artsy/ bohemian/ hippy bent: Amazon has these great smock waisted drop crotch pants. The smocked waist is about 5 or 6 inches wide from top to bottom, I've worn them just above my natural waist, no issues with pancaking and light support for the pouch. Free size/ one size fits all, which is good because I'm working on gaining weight. Search Sarouel or Aladdin pants, seems they typically run somewhere around 10$ which is not awful. I ordered 4 pairs for work and have been very happy with how comfortable they are.  I love them, plan to order some fancier ones at a later date.

Hi all,

I also recommend these pants :

https://www.zappos.com/p/columbia-saturday-traill-pant-black/product/8451880/color/3

made by columbia. They have an a lot of stretch and are very comfortable.  The fabric actually helps to hold 'stuff' in place, which I like. They come in other styles and also for men.

Zappos offers free shipping BOTH ways. Nice feature.

The fabric is synthetic and quite light weight. Might not get you though a Canadian winter, but great in warmer climates and for travel.

Some styles have zippers, snaps and a draw string.

Have to say their seems to be a bigger choice for the Ladies, One piece of advice I would past on is find a good draper/clothes store and don,t be afraid to tell that you have an ostomy and what your needs are. also pick a day in the week that would be quiet for them so they will have more time to help (not a Saturday) also they may have an in house altering service. I have a store in my local town that has when out of their way so many times!

Yes, I do think there are more choices for women.

More things like yoga pants or skirts with roll over waist bands. These really help. One can even find roll over bands on woven fabric pants and skirts now... not just knits.

I used to wear dresses, but its all about accessibility .

I should also mention about the Columbia pants above, they are made with moisture and stain resistant material ( woven, but very stretchy). Those properties will have a  special meaning for us.

Hi Paul-your our ground hog!!  :-)  It is groundhog day-- more or less winter.. ?? I will pay more attention  to YOU  than him tho.. We have a fun group and if you have humor we have the lounge and sometimes sneak a little ha ha's into other areas. Most of all, Eric, and answered my many questions that I thought I had a handle on also-- I can see what others go through and thank my lucky star's that I have not been there or (yet)  But if I do, I will feel more at ease that there is a healthy outcome. = Surived it and tell it.. We r family here, or as  says "tribe" what ever the word, we r here for each other during the difficult times, and the good times.  As you may have noticed, there are NO STUPID questions..  A few re=peats, but that brings us all back together again and then Eric, will send us off to the proper site.. Right Eric???????????

u can also read about us on our pictures at MEMBERS, to get a better idea about us-some do and some don't.. The major point is, We know what each is going through and went through as our family's and friends even the Doctors don't know..  They are text book. :-( This is Such a big help to me.. I became a whole person soon after I joined in.. Best to you Paul. m.

Paul, the belt line must be a big problem-it would to  me..  Why do they do that anyways?  Doesn't seem to be a nice placement.  At least your a guy and can wear suspenders.. Woman would have a issues.. I am sure that there are other men can help you along with dressing and attending odd issues of pouching products.

I goofed!! Ground hog day is tomorrow.. But your our cutie any ways!! And it is going to snow for us here in Ct, USA. In fact it already started.  A nice cool 30 degrees.............  What ever, the ground hog seems to be fake news any ways ..  Happy rails............

Hi Paul, Welcome to our world . I agree with you about the suspenders. Although my kids snickered, I find them more than useful.  My pants can be loose and yet, not fall off...

Try to tell us about your self.

And we ladies can wear dress's.. but have the same issues with the undies.. I would be in the Doctors face if Nellie was waist inserted!! MOVE IT!!!!!!!!!! What were they thinking?? Ground hog day today.. We are going to get 6 more weeks of winter.. Fake news!! ????  Poor little guy, take him out from his WARM comfort zone? yea he would go back to that right away.. Do they have waists?

Good luck with your suspenders, I see them a lot, some rather fancy!! Builds charater !! Like base ball hats with the owners signtures of different pins of bonding's. Very personal!!

>.> I might have to ressurect suspenders in my wardrobe. That is a great idea for those jeans I can't quite fill out yet... I could wear one over the undershirt, leave oscar hang like I do then drop another tshirt over it.

Hmmm... Kind of interesting. I'd worry a bit about my bra getting shifted uncomfortable though. https://www.amazon.com/Belly-Ups-Original-Maternity-Suspenders/dp/B000MF8K9Q/ref=sr_1_169_mc?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1517611723&sr=1-169&keywords=suspenders

I kind of hate dresses. Oscar seems pretty visible under most of the ones I have. Messes the drape up.

Now I haven ever saw suspenders like that before Felicity! I wear shirt dress's with black tights. I give a nice puff of air into the pouch for Nellie to expand-along with a bit of worry's.. I am still in the expermental stages of dressings. When I put one on I will send u pictures for the clothing thread :-)

I pull the top of the panty hose or tights over a large pillow to stretch the top out.. FOR DAYS ON END!! As thin as I am I have to do this. Just puff up the pouch with air, and that gives it room for Nellie's moods of comfort..  she can be a brat !! if she spits back so  make sure that all is clear for that number!! :-)

I remember u saying that u have a waist line of Oscar (am I correct? ) Re: your last picture, I think u look great at your recent weight.. And u don't look your age either.. but my dear, age hits fast!! and the extra weight? wait for that later on in life.. Get yourself to the second hand shop and apply your new clothing to yourself slowly-- cheep - they have lots of jeans etc, if your in need of better fittings for your waist area stoma.. I did that and then added better clothing's when I could afford it..

Maternity jeans stretch well along with pants.. they come up high above the waist-u have the picture u didn't post that.. :-0       Sorry guys, suck with the suspenders, and over shirts or preppie coats.

Oscar sits right about where pants waists hit me. I have tended to wear my exercise pants lower  with the bag hanging out. My jeans sit below, yay for low rise, bag out again. The salwar/ alladin pants I can wear however. I prefer them at normal waist and tuck the bag in.

That must be a pain in the butt !! One time when Nellie was having a had time of it, I pulled out her dress, and my undies popped off the wafer... Yes, Another leak at infusion. :-(  I think I lucked out-My Dr. put Nellie in the proper place..  In truth, I would rather not have Nellie.. But at lease I got a decent home base for her.

Good day Zvitask you ask to say a bit about myself.I am a 65 year old male,in 2011 I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer had in 2011 22 radiation treatments surgery to remove tumour, and left with a double stoma,8 month of chemotherapy and a reversal that year. The reversal left me sick for 5 years lived near the washroom and was afraid to eat what a bad time. Then in October 2016 I was in the hospital to have a drainage tube inserted in my but for 4 month finally had a colostomy. I am feeling much better eating food small meals and a bit of a social life,it was trying time for my wife and I.Life with a stoma at belt line is a effort that I will overcome, despite all of this I am a very happy person with a good sense of humour. As for belt Line for me suspenders work well and not careing what others see or think. Some of you may like this clothing by local friends here in Moncton N.B.  Google worlds best onesie by tux-Kickstarter.wow that felt good to say something I do not do talk about myself.    PAUL
