@tony-h I have waterr wipes brand water wipes here.

There's only 3 ingredients in them. The one time that I decided to try them I could not even get the bag to adhere to my skin.

They have changed the formulation of ivory now. Someone else has bought the company. It no longer floats and they do not use tallow anymore in any of the store bought bar soaps. The oils I'm speaking of are like essential oils and moisturizer's. Every single bar soap that is store bought has changed. The oils they are putting in ivory is oils that repel mosquitoes and insects. Go figure.

Yes so I'm trying to find something that has no added essential oil or moisturizer. There is really only one unscented brand that is reasonable in price which is dove sensitive but it too has moisturizer in it.

@veganostomy I have pondered this idea as well but I just haven't acted on it yet. Maybe you can make the perfect ostomy soap and sell it!!

@gardengypsy it's not that I'm allergic to the soap. I can use them, but being that they are putting oil and moisturizer in them will affect the seal. The bag will not stick well. I'm on the hunt still for something though that will be perfect and not affect the seal.

@tigerlily That's great info! I'm well stocked with bar soap at the moment, but will consider this in the future! I love making my own stuff from scratch, so this is right up my alley!

@veganostomy Eric, if you can follow a recipe, you can make your own soap. The most difficult part is safely using lye, which is quite caustic, but you just have to take precautions, like wearing gloves. An alternative is buying a melt and pour soap base, which doesn’t require using lye (because they’ve done it for you). I prefer the lye recipe because I know exactly what’s in my soap, and I like making things from raw ingredients. If you try this, I suggest that you keep soap making utensils (pots, measuring tools, stir spoons etc) separate from your food utensils, especially if you use lye. Two local companies that sell soap making supplies are Saffire Blue in Woodstock (saffireblue.ca) and New Direction Aromatics (newdirectionsaromatics.ca) in Mississauga. Although I have never bought soap making supplies from either of them, I have bought other supplies (I love making my own perfume from essential oils) and the products are good quality from both. They also sell moulds for pouring your soap into.

Let us know if you try your hand at making soap. Many years ago, I was part of a Christmas craft home tour in the small village where I was living. I made soap for months before, and made gifts baskets of homemade soap, bath salts, loofahs, etc. Every year, I sold out, no matter how much I made. It was astonishing to me how many people wanted real soap instead of the detergent bars most of us use. So, you never know - you might even start up your own side business!

If you make your own soap, you can control what goes into it (and what doesn’t).

Before I bought my last batch of soap (for the shower), I was seriously considering making my own soap! I may need to do a little research to know what to get, but it seems fairly easy, no?

@gardengypsy All soaps, by definition have oil or fat in them. Soap is made by combining lye with fat or oil in a chemical reaction called saponification. Many years ago, as the result of several outbreaks of hives, I started making my own soap. It isn’t difficult, and there is lots of information on the internet about making soap. I started by mixing beef tallow with lye, and moved on to olive oil instead of tallow (I got tired of rendering beef fat into tallow) which produced a nicer soap. If you make your own soap, you can control what goes into it (and what doesn’t). So many soaps now have extra oil added after saponification as emollients or fragrance, but you might be able to find soap without these at a health food store. Ivory soap, by the way, floats not because it’s “pure” but because it has been whipped, which adds a large amount of air to it. It was a mistake that the company cleverly turned into a feature, selling it as “so pure, it floats”. Brilliant marketing! I never did figure out what caused my hives; I was on medication to treat it for about a year, and never had the same problem after that. But I made my own soap for many years just because there was nothing on the market that matched the quality of homemade soap at the time. So many commercial soaps are really no better than detergents. However, there is more choice now, so check out a health food store.
