I've used a couple different kinds now, there are coloplast ones that are called a "plus" version.. a bit more expensive at about 7-8 bucks a piece.. but they are more flexible it seems.

Chris, what's the product number for those? I have to see if I've tried them before, but it doesn't sound like it!

Just an update on the sheets.. I've used a couple different kinds now, there are coloplast ones that are called a "plus" version.. a bit more expensive at about 7-8 bucks a piece.. but they are more flexible it seems. I get carried responses.. some times one day, sometimes two. I'm actually just going to bed after my second day without any itching.. Which hadn't happened in a long time. Hoping for a third day! Imagine that.

Anyway.. I'm rethinking what is happening with my setup. I think the ring did its job, but maybe the sheet, which is being cut tight, is acting as both a pressure on the ring, but also a squeegee effect on the stoma. The nurse also suggested I pinch the ring up around the stoma. 

Anyway.. Going for three days.

I am still having some issues more related to leaks(i had to change my bag 4 times yesterday...not fun)

i have only used the protective sheet twice with some less than favorable results(leaked very soon after bag change both times)

my skin is still irritated but is looking better and not as sore...trail and error

Try the Safe N Simple barrier sheets . They come in different sizes . Very thin and mine stays  on 5 days no problem  . Great price comes  in a box of 5. I use the 4 inch square fits under my 4 in wafer .

Sorry to hear that malsgal. I totally understand. For the past few months I was changing 2-3 times a day, with the odd 4 changes a day. Totally destroyed me emotionally and financially. 

I've been getting some help at a great hospital lately and I'm now at 1.5-2 days before a change is necessary.

Eric.. the numbers for the more rigid one is coloplast 3210 and the nice flexible one is 3110.

The flex one is labelled as a "hydrocolloid Dressing" and the other one is just labelled as a "protective sheet"

Ah, I think I know what you're describing. I've used a product like that from ConvaTec called the Duoderm Extra Thin sheets. It's almost like skin!

I'm new here but have had a  lot of problems so want to help if I can.

I had consistent  leaking for close to 2 years and tried lots of things. The 2 things that have made the biggest difference: a convex wafer and drying my peristomal skin with the low heat of  a hair dryer + heating my seal and wafer with the hair dryer to soften them before applying. 

After almost 2 years of near constant skin irritation and itching (and lots of WOCN visits); being told repeatedly that true allergy to ostomy products is extremely rare, I finally started seeing a dermatologist about a month ago. So far, she has done "patch testing" with all of the ostomy products that touch my skin. She taped a piece of each product to my fore arm (she also tested the lubricating deodorizer I use and my pouch liner, just to be thorough); she then covered everything with a medical tape that she had tested on me previously to make sure I had no reaction to the tape. I left it for a week, couldn't get it wet; removed everything and then sent her pictures of my arm. I reacted to the seal, both the inner and the outer part of the wafer (which explains why I always have red inflamed skin around the outside edge of my wafer - and that CAN'T be from leaks!), and the Brava seal paste that comes in strips. The only thing I didn't react to is the pouch liner and the deodorizer. And she confirmed it is Allergic Contact Dermatitis. She also took a hole-punch biopsy from the skin near the outside edge of my wafer but the results aren't in yet.

The reason I share this is to affirm: if you are not getting help from the WOCN, please go to a dermatologist! I had tried several different brands of wafers and seals, anti-fungal treatments (oral and topical), crusting and also the Brava protector sheets; all to no avail. I would have seen the dermatologist much sooner but I have a lot of other cancer related complications going on, plus I have lost my mom and sister since all of this skin stuff started...so I kept putting it on the back burner, so to speak. But, it IS possible to be allergic to these products, no matter what the WOCNs say. 

Also, my experience with the Brava protective barriers: I could not get them off! Even after 6 days of wear, the adhesive still took some of my skin with it. Not a good solution in my opinion. I have not tried other brands of protective sheets. My dermatologist is going to give me some Tagaderm sheets to try with my next wafer change and maybe that will help until all of this is resolved.

The next step, is that I will have patch testing done for the separate ingredients in each product I reacted to. The dermatologist will then try to help me find wafers and seals without those ingredients that I am allergic to.
