Had to go to ER again Friday morning. Slight bleeding from Stoma. Had xray and blood work and everything was fine. This happened a month ago as well. I had constipation this time and had to take 1 dose of Miralax for 3 days. On 3rd day, finally things were happening, but it got stuck at opening of Stoma. Stayed that way for hours. I had to manually get it out, then normal output began. Same thing a month ago. Will NOT do that again!! Since my emergency colon resection surgery in March, developed heart problems...so now on heart med and have a Cardiologist. See her in December. I have been incredibly stressed since the Surgery and I am on valium....1 a day of the lowest dose. It does help, but some stress still remains. I am eating more of a variety of foods now. Rather then look up what I can and can't eat, which was a big stress for me, I eat what I want in small portions and it serns to work well. All that has happened to me leaves me anxious and tearful at times and getting it under control had been a battle.

question for you Eric how do you cope as a vegan ? The only thing I notice I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and apart of some smaller amounts of meat ive began cooking vegetables with eggs which seems to leave me more satisfied. But I’ll quickly get tired of eggs soon at this rate. I’d like to incorporate more vegetarian meals but feel satisfied after. Any suggestions?

Proteins help to make you feel full, longer. When you remove meat from the diet, you have to replace it with another protein.

My meals will generally include at least once source of protein: tofu, legumes, nuts/seeds, etc. We use a wide variety of beans and legumes to add more variety: lentiles, chickpeas, white and red kidney beans, fava beans, romano beans, black beans, etc.... loads of options, and they all taste different.

From time to time, we will add some faux meat to our meals (i.e. burgers, veggie ground, mock chicken nuggets, and so on), but we don't rely on those as they can be expensive.

I'd be happy to discuss this further in a separate thread (I can split this one up, so we don't have to start a new one). 👌

This post is to help troubleshoot issues with ballooning that member @pamangione49 mentioned in her introduction post.

In the past 4 years I found out I have a gluten intolerance issue. I need to eat gluten free plus doing plant base. I noticed a post 4 months ago. I would to talk to that person. I did not get the name. When I eat plant base like beans, broccoli, chickpeas my pouch blows up like a balloon. I have tried to soak the beans overnight to cut down on the gas or even adding baking soda but it doesn't seem to help. So I avoid beans. I can however, eat refried beans a small amount. I know having an ostomy causes all of us to have gas in our pouches but mine is horrible. I avoid gluten, pasta, breads are the worse. I wonder how this person handles his ostomy.

For any food-related gas, I always suggest keeping a food diary. A few things to consider while trying to figure things out:

Sometimes, adjusting to foods takes time (days to weeks) before our bodies and gut bacteria level out.

Since you're able to eat refried beans, but not regular beans, is it possible that they need to be prepared differently? Refried beans are usually pinto beans - have you tried canned pinto beans on their own to see how that works?

Start with small quantities and work your way up.

Consider taking a digestive enzyme product like Bean-Zyme , which can help to prevent gas. Bean-Zyme is a vegan version of "Beano".

Think back to before having an ostomy. If you were getting a lot of gas with certain foods then, it's likely they will continue to cause gas for you now.

Many of our members have been using the Osto EZ-Vent ( Osto EZ-Vent – REVIEW) with great success when it comes to dealing with pouch ballooning. Of course, it's best to find a solution at the source, but this can help in the meantime.

One other thing that came to mind: Is the gas actually coming from your stoma (i.e. you can hear farts) or is it being formed in your ostomy pouch through bacteria. It may surprise some, but gas can be formed in out pouch when our body isn't producing any gas.

Another member discussed his strategy in dealing with this, and I've used it myself with success: https://www.veganostomy.ca/community/ostomy-products/using-hollister-m9-deodorant-to-minimize-ballooning/
