I am almost 2 years post op with Subtotal Colectomy...partial sigmoid colon removal. Are there any pies, coffee cake or any other desserts that my Colectomy can tolerate?? Any suggestions?? Thanks!

Hi Jillian, Trying a little portion at a time to see how your insides interact with the food seems to work well. I avoid textures that are similar to non-dessert foods that my body doesn’t like; for example, stringy things like celery (unless it is cut small).

My guess is that something like raisin pie (who eats that, anyway? ????) might not be your friend, because of all the skins. Or fruit salad with a lot of grapes.

Start small ….

I love the smell of coffee in the morning. It smells like .... victory.

Hey Jillian , as LLNorth said , try little portions and see how it goes , until I got diabetes I was basically able to eat anything apart from celery and mushrooms(causes blockages) , went from 30 years being afraid to eat to eating everything , now I'm more or less sugar free but still enjoying my food .

and one piece of great advice I got from one nurse is to CHEW CHEW CHEW your food , helps prevent blockages , enjoy being able to eat again without worrying where the nearest toilet is .

I don't personally see any desserts that might create problems (in moderation, of course). But just be aware of desserts that have chunks of fruit or nuts.

For those, chew well and take it slow, as others have suggested. Enjoy!

I have to agree with the suggestions above about trying small amounts first to see what you can tolerate; also chew thoroughly. For me Jello brand chocolate pudding is my all time favorite dessert! Also love a good chocolate chip cookies.

Flying free.

chocolate

Do you find that chocolate affects your output at all? Anything chocolate or cocoa (always dairy-free when I consume it) tends to turn my output to sludge. Still worth it! ???? ????

@veganostomy for whatever reason chocolate doesn't seem to be a problem. I'm lactose intolerant though and last week didn't read the label and enjoyed a 'tres leches' cake dessert not realizing that the cake was soaked/swimming in whole milk! I sure paid for my thrills with that one ???? , was up several times in the night emptying my balloon. Oh I nicknamed my pouch "balloon" because sometimes that's what it does - balloons full ready for takeoff! ????

Flying free.
