G'Day all, I'm a 33 year old newbie ostomate (had colon removal and ileostomy formation surgery on 3rd Dec 2019) living in Australia. I've watched a lot of the Veganostomy videos which have helped me heaps already (thanks Eric!), so I thought I'd join the forum and see what other helpful info is available. I'm a vegetarian, a horse rider (dressage) and a big fan of heavy metal music. I'd be interested to learn from other horse riders and/or heavy metal fans... e.g. how long did it take you to get back in the saddle? Can you still thrash around in a mosh pit without damaging your stoma? Obviously it's only been 2 weeks since my surgery, but I'm keen to know how soon I might be able to start my dressage training again and buy tickets to a thrash metal concert!! Hi Metalhorse, Welcome to the forum. You are really fresh out of the box! I can say you’re ostomy will not stop you doing or enjoying the activities you love. In fact the stoma will give you the chance to do more. My recovery time to normal life was around 8 weeks. Only been on a horse once when I was 5 and was terrified ?. Ask and learn ? ileostomy 31st August 1994 for Crohns Welcome, @metalhorse12! You'll definitely want to look into getting a stoma guard once you're fully healed. I do suggest waiting until you are healed before using/getting one, as they do put additional pressure around your stoma and may not be very comfortable this soon after surgery. Were you able to see Slayer during their Farewell Tour? I would have loved to have seen them live. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. Welcome Metalhorse, You will be back in the saddle and mosh pit in no time. Now that you are past the surgery phase and into recovery, you are going to feel much better really soon. You have a great attitude . Prepare to have fun again! Onset of severe Ulcerative Colitus Oct.2012. Subtotal colectomy with illiostomy July 2015; Peristomal hernia repair ( Sugarbaker, mesh, laparoscopic) May 2017. Metalhourse12...well my life is lacking in those activities but I am sure with the right security systems supporting your pouch and stoma that these activities could be done just like before. If anything over the time of healing I have been able to do just as much if not more interesting activities with my stoma. I would simply advise that you check with your doctor first to make sure everything has healed to 100%, making a point to inform him/her of your favored activities, and make sure that your insides have had a chance to heal as well as what you can see on the outside. Start at home with gentle but continuing exercise so you have no surprises on a horse back or of being moshed in the pit! All the best to you! Linda G'day Metalhorse, You're about a week ahead of me! I live in Sydney as well and had my colon removed with an ileostomy on 9 Dec. Can't help you with horses or heavy metal but just received my Stealthbelt. These are used a lot by ostomates who plays sports. Might be worth to have a look these. Welcome both Metalhorse and DutchOzzie to the forum. I can't add anything to what the others said, since it is all good advice. I do want you to know that I've been watching the news about Australia lately and that your nation is in my prayers. Hopefully, relief from the fires will come soon. God be with you, Stella Welcome Metalhorse and DutchOzzie!! Metalhorse, my husband just got us tickets to Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison, and Joan Jett in September. That is probably the closest I get to heavy metal. LOL. It sounds like it will be quite the concert tour. They are only playing in big arenas, and the concert starts at 4pm to fit it all in. We are driving to Seattle, WA for the concert. Glad to have a couple new members here! -Liza
