Do you use a barrier wipe? That's what I was taught to use with the stoma powder. I only use the powder on the really damaged portion but use the wipe on the entire surface the appliance will stick to. Also, when my skin was bad, I changed 3x's a week rather than two. It seemed to help.

Is it red and burning under the entire wafer or just around the base?

No, I don't use barrier wipes any more. My skin is good and I didn't think they were helping to stick my wafer down. I guess its meant to be a protective layer of glue or something. I just use stoma powder around the stoma, seems to help seal the wafer/skin joint.

I also was taught at the hospital to use it all, powder everywhere and wipes everywhere.

I had some red patches for weeks then they started weeping and so went to a dermatologist ( my GP thought it was fungus and proscribed a cream for that...didn't work). The dermatologist diagnosed  eyxema ( can't spell it, sorry) and gave me some kind of foaming stuff ( like small can of shaving cream which kind of dried on contact) and it healed up quickly. If you have ongoing skin problems it might be good to go to a dermatologist. ( explain that you can't use oily or waxy stuff under the wafer).

You REALLY need to keep the stoma output off of your skin. I now change to a schedule( four days for me), not to the leaks/failures.

This is definitely just the result of having very watery output the other day.  It must have seeped though without causing a noticeable leak.  Its right below my stoma, was just wondering if anyone had secrets on how to heal it faster.

I have had a stoma for 9 weeks. I had red excoriated skin around my stoma and I have found putting Vaseline around the base of the stoma protects it from output.  However, I change my bag every day.  I have tried the seals and I think Vaseline does as good a job.  If you keep it close to the stoma it doesn't interfere with the sticking of the bag.  I use a one piece drainable.

Hey Sydneychic, have you tried using stoma paste? I'm surprised that you can get Vaseline around your stoma without it messing up your wafer! Glad it works for you.

Hi 👋 my name is Elaine.

I had very sore skin about a month and a half ago and actually had a stoma nurse come to check it out. After some trail and error, we discovered I had developed on  allergy to the paste I had been using since my operation in August 2016.  Also, For me, I was using too many products (like barrier film and remover wipes) along with the paste and berrie ring.

My nurse did a test sample on my upper arm of the three different pasted I had in my supplies and covered them for 24 hours. In that time we found out that the paste I was using since my hospital stay was the one I was allergic to.

I stopped using paste altogether and just used the holister barrier ring and sen sura flange. Within 4 changes(1month),  my skin was completely cleared up. I never had a leak before or after

Hope this helps

I really think less is more. The least amount of products I use the better my skin is

Thanks Elaine for your answer. I also believe the less 'stuff' I use the better.
