Hollister 2 Piece Separation

I have been using the Hollister 2 piece system with the moldable wafer and then the filtered bag. The only issue that i've been facing (and it's a pretty frequent one) is for some reason the bag's flange keeps barely separating from the adhesive wafer's flange (where the 2 click together). I wear my bag horizontally with a support band around my waist, but the separation always happens on the bottom part of the ring and of course some stool leaks out and i'm forced to change my bag. Any suggestions? I haven't tried any other products because my home care nurse taught me with everything i'm currently using and i'm most comfortable with this setup, but if this is a Hollister 2 piece problem then i'd consider trying something else. Thanks guys!

It's unusual for the flange to fail like that.

If you are 100% certain that it's being snapped together perfectly, then can you identify whether the bottom of the flange is perhaps bending with movement (like when you bent over, or twist)?

Do you have another box of wafers and bags you can try (with different lot #'s from what you're using now) so you can see whether the problem happens again?

In the meantime, give Hollister a call and see what they think. I'd be interested in knowing the source of this.

You might also try wearing the bag vertically for awhile and see if that helps. Are you sure it 'clicks' into place when you attach the bag to the wafer flange?  Do you 'burp' the bag at this juncture too, since you are using filterless bags?  ( I use those too but I add the Osto EZ- Vents). Just some random thoughts. And, as already mentioned it might be a problem with this batch of bags/wafers? Good to ask the Hollister people, like Eric said.

Let us know what you learn.

I can't tell from your note if you have always worn it sideways and it used to be OK that way or if something else has changed for you. Like the way you move or something.

I also use this brand and system and have had no leaks from this area,( just from under the wafer now and then like most of us).

Good luck!

Ok thanks for the responses! I was able to contact Holister and they agree that the lot might be defective, so I provided the lot number and should be getting replacements soon. And sorry for the confusion Dona, I have always worn my bag horizontally with a support band around my waist (soon to be a Stealthbelt). I also can definitely guarantee that i'm snapping the 2 pieces together as much as they can possibly snap. I will let you guys know if the new lot that i'm getting soon has any changes!

Also another question for you guys since i'm just 3 months in and i'm still figuring all this out. I use the Holister bags that do have a filter, but of course I only get a day or 2 of use out of it before it stops working. The problem I usually have though is after the day or 2 I start to get odor out of the filter, but no output coming out of it. Should I maybe change the bag every day or other day? I've been going 4 days at a time with the same wafer and bag before changing both at the same time.

Change the bag as often as you like (more so if you've got them covered by insurance).  There's no harm in doing that and the filters will work better for you. Only the wafer needs to be changed at the appropriate time to ensure a balance of skin health,  convenience, and longevity.

The only thing I can think of, being that I was using the same bags and wafers, is the fact you wear it horizontal, I never tried that, and never ever had that problem.

Just a thought,

Dan

I had the same problem with the Hollister 2pc. I switched to the 1pc 8954 and have been getting up to 8 days use. I have to pay out of pocket here in New Brunswick as the only financial help is thru welfare. Also as to odors, I use Hollister deoderant was I  change and then every couple days I will use Sunlight anti-bacterial orange dish soap and warm water in a water bottle and rince out. Helps quite a bit.

Welcome  CWilliams97...As far as the filter goes, if you are not ready to change your bag or can't and you get odor, you can put tape over the filter when it starts leaking anything. I found that out the hard way and was lucky enough to have my dog along to blame the odor on!  I have had a bit of fluid come out too. I have also at times had success with taking a piece of TP and folding it over the filter, squeeze it and slide it to the left side. I repeat as needed. By sliding it to the left, it seemed to squeeze out some of the steam/fluid that gathers in it plugging it. I could get sometimes another two days out of it and then I would get the odor. After seeing a video or reading something Eric wrote, I now put tape over the filter and use the Osto EZ Vents. If you have not, you may want to look into them. I can not imagine being without them ever again. An out of pocket expense, and you have to install them yourself. But so worth it.  With a two piece it may be easier to burp the bag then the one piece I use. I love the M9 holister liquid deodorant, you can also get a deodorant that is thicker and comes in single use tubes for times you may have a thicker output. This product will stay near the top of the bag longer and can also be rubbed to spread it around the bag. You put it in the pouch every time you empty, and it is just fine to use water only to rinse the bag with or after emptying. If you need to give your bag a bit of a scrub, you can put some M9 in the pouch and and a bit of water, rub the sides together, rinse and then add the drops again & be on your way. I really do not think it is too wise to get dish detergent (not for internal use) on your stoma, the M9 does a great job on odor. I was taught to clean the mouth of the bag by scrunching TP, put it in the bag turn and pull out.  Repeat till clean. I find that folding two or three squares into one, placing my index finger in the center, fold it over your finger, wrap it around and then place finger wrapped in TP in the mouth to do the job. It took me a year to learn that and I find it works so much better. You will learn little secrets as you go along and find what works best for you, we all have done that. Make sure you pack in a zip type bag  supplies for when you leave the house. That took me 6 months! I also learned to pack a change of clothes. Just expect a leak when you think your safe...you will be prepared and no huge surprises then. Eric has done a great job with information and tricks. Watch as many as you can and choose a name for your new little friend. Mine is Rose.

I had a Hollister two-piece separate a couple of weeks ago; I was sitting on the couch at home and felt dampness - sure enough, the thing had come apart at the bottom of the coupling. I have been using these for 11 months and this is the first time it happened. I assumed that I had just not snapped it completely, but now I wonder - will keep this in mind. Glad to know I am not the only one.

Colostomy 4/30/18.

If it was a one-off, it may have just been bad luck. But if you notice it happening more (even if it doesn't produce a leak), please let Hollister know.

When I put my appliance on, I generally give it a little tug to see if it's actually going to hold in place. Hopefully, this doesn't happen again!

@veganostomy

Hi Eric, do you have a video on the best way to change just the pouch on Hollister 2 piece?

I had colostomy in October 2019, and just recently have been having odor coming from I believe the filter. It stops working for me in less than24 hours. I don't have any leaks. Is it really ok to put tape over filter to help with odor. And is it true that a clogged filter can cause order from bag?

If I just change to a new bag, are there any tips on doing that the best way?

Thank you,and

Merry Christmas

I don't have a video on how to change just the bag, and there are quite a few things that need to be taken into account to prevent stool from coming out while you're trying to do that, but here's what I've done with success:

1. I rinse my appliance out with water when I empty it just before changing the pouch. I pay special attention to make sure there is no stool around the coupling or around the stoma. I use warm water. If you use cold water while rinsing your bag, your stoma may shrink a little and you may end up with a leak.

2. After my bag has been rinsed, I will hang a "kitchen catcher" bag off my waste in the same way I do when I change my appliance. This will collect any stool that might come out of my stoma and makes things easier to manage.

3. I remove my bag then clean in and around the coupling with gauze, using as many as needed to make sure it's as clean as possible.

4. I put the new bag on as usual.

The key really is to make sure that the coupling isn't soiled when changing the bag or else you'll end up with a poor fit, possible smells, or leaks.

@veganostomy

Thanks as usual, you have been a big help with this new life of mine! So many things to figure out. Oh, just a FYI, I did put some duck tape on the filter and it did help quite a bit on the odor problem. At some point I will try the Coloplast filter system.

Thanks, again

Hi Kevin,

I also use Hollister two piece. Like you I had leakage FROM the filter/vent. A better long term solution for you and less expensive  would be to switch to buying/using the filterless bags and add your own Osto EZ-Vent to each bag ( Amazon has them). It doesn't take too long to attach them if you prepare them in batches. You can then vent gas whenever you need to and they do not leak and there is no odor. This has worked really well for me.  I don't think any of the filter systems that come with the bags work very well.

Good luck. And Merry Christmas to you.

Thank you Dona,

I have been given some EZ-vent and on my next order I will give them a try. Thanks again. I have never used social media before but find this site very helpful. Maybe I can reciprocate when I have more experience!
