Hi Linda

I too am left with the stump but I guess luckily I don't seem to have the spasms for some reason but I have had bleeding and have used suppositories (Canasa) and am now on enemas (Mesalamine) although I'm not very good at doing them like I'm supposed to my bleeding has slowed down . Sounds like you have had way to many operations for one person to have to endure but sounds like you are doing great ! I see you will be 60 in Feb. I will be 60 also in March and the fact that you are going to water ski is great ! I hope you get out there and do it ! I tried it before think I drank half the lake before I got up . Haha . Some people think of 60 as old I just tell them 60 isn't old its middle age we have a long way to go ! Glad your Ileostomy is working for you mine has also made things better for me . Hope you don't have to have the new surgery you mentioned and  good luck with your disability tax credit and getting it worked out .

Hi John68...is that your age?  I know I m not yet a legal senior, but man, there are some days that I feel so old and tired and want to run away.  I have always faced life head on and love it a lot.  Life is what keeps you going.  We need to have plans and expectations to get on with things and keep them moving.  I always make some plan for the next day even if it is just getting one of the two washrooms cleaned.  I always think ahead about what I might make for meals also.  If I am craving something...this can be trouble.  We have few really good restaurants where I live and it makes it difficult to enjoy a great meal when you pay for a lot  and get a greasy burger kind of thing. This is usually a case of someone told someone they could cook and they really can not!!!   Even finding a good pizza is  problem here.  So I make my own and enjoy that.  I always put something extra in the freezer for when I crave and make  it for another time.  I love to try new recipes also and really enjoy that.

About the spasms.....deep subject for me.  Mine will often last about 10 to 30 min.  It feels as if someone has taken a square fence post...shoved it you know where, and is twiting it.  Very painful and tiring.  The bullet for the bladder spasms also helps those spasms.   The longer ones...exhausting.  They really take something out of a person.   This is the first time I have ever talked about these thing in  public...a closed public I guess.  I so appreciate being able to say it sort of outloud.

I like that...more power to yer  back wheel!  I love a good laugh!  I have had my stoma for 8 and a half years now.  Not sure of the date, but I guess I could figure it out cause it was five weeks before my hubby died.   I was horrified at his funeral as I was so afraid of a problem...my Momn bless her heart carried my bag of supplies with her all day long and it even held clean clothes just incase something disatrous happened.  I was exhausted as the week before there was little to no  sleep.  My man asked to die at home and I did not have a problem with that as I new well what to expect.  He died very peacefully.   I do not think I will ever forget that day.

Anyways, I have felt very welcome to the group and enjoy the converstions and encouragment.  Eric had a dream and went for it...it is working.  Thank you again Eric.

I am no longer a closet Ostimate.

Linda.

Michelle...it took about four months for mine to settle after my ileostomy.  I was somewhat terrified but realized that I was starting to heal and also my doctor pointed out that fresh blood is bright red and older blood more brownish and some red.   Extra fluid with it is normal also. Good luck with that.  All my surgery started with the removal of the large bowel in 96 and from there ieces to the puzzles were removed over a year and 8 opertions.  It has litterally been one thing after the other for me medically and it is tiring. Anesthetic alone takes so much out of a person and can take months to  heal.  Remember tht your body has been thru a lot and that it is going to take time for swelling from surgery and disease to make things settle down.  I wish you only the best and to hang in there.  For a while my rectum was the roots of all evil.  Now, I apprecite it so much for the bladder disease problems.  Hope you feel well soon.  Keep us in the loop.  Even one half of a good day is a good thing.

Hi John...thank youso much for replying.  I really thought I was alone in the spasm department. It can be so painful mst of the time.  I am not just going to waterski, I am also going to havemy son film it!  I have had a lot of medical issues in my life right down to hysterectomy, and hand surgery fr something called Extensor Digitorum Brevis Manus.  So rare that there were only 28 cases documented at the time of my surgery.  My hand surgeon was the 8th orthatpedic guy to look at my hand. He was down right excited when he new wht it was and said that they only landed on this topic of it for less then 30 seconds in hand surgery school.  You jut do not see it they told me.  He was at my bed when I woke up from the surgery. Told me the thing in the top centre f my left hand...I am also left handed...had roots down inbetween all my fingers and into the wrist bones.  It healed well and other then some clumsiness for a while  I was very glad for the surgery as I had lost a good deal of use of my hand.  It grew back three times!  Then a fourth surgery for severe scar tissue.  Something I grow free of charge. And grow lots of.  I can not imagine what I would have in my sbdomen for scra tissue.  Do not even want to go there.  I so apprecite the openess here and being able to write outloud to have others share in our challenges.  Thank you for responding...nice to meet you and John68.   Linda

My point about the the hand surgeon being the 8th orthapedic guy,.....never give up when we feel something is wrong...follow our gut instincts as I believe it is the brain talking to us and giving us warning.

LORDY,  LORDY. LORD have mercy!

I was under the impression that I have been through the wringer.  Now I  see that I got off easy.

I really wanted to save my rectum BUT the tumor was growing in it too close to the anus. So, on the advice of experts, I lost my ass. No Butts about it.

Now,  I hear from you how grateful I should be that I don't have any problems with my tuchus. Thanks, fellows  , for the pick me up.

What I get out of this is that my pain is not as bad as yours,  and vicer versa...

Linda, marcie, john ,eric,  robert and the rest of you who are listening and who are also hearing us speak out our problems,  THANK. YOU for performing this vital service.

I hope that i am capable of doing this for you, too.

Dear Z....Please do not think that your input or experience is any less important or  less knowledgeable or however you spell it then the rest of us.  Every input about our output is important and can help when you least think it can.  I am aware that I have been thru the wringer.  Two years of being so badly malnourished and  13 1/2 months in two different hospitals,  transferred by the first to the second, 11 months of a pic line,  waking up three times with the crash cart and a nurse sitting by my bed....I know it is somewhat of a miracle that I survived.  Being away from my family for 6 months was torture.  The thing is people...we have survived.  We dug deep and pulled out of our butts,  more life. We have a lot in common,  we have all had colonoscopies, swallowed gross salty gunk and worse,  and then had major surgery which rerranged our bodies.  Heck, the last operation I had,  I had to request that they place my beelybutton right back where it belongs verses on the far right side of my abdomen.  That kind of freaked me out some...made it more real.   That was a result of having to wake up with my abdomen wide open and ready to heal unstitched from the  inside out  after a major burst and infection.  We are stronger still for being able to talk about it and share our experience to help others realize what is normal and what is not.  I would say that we are a blessed group and so glad that God made smart people who can tell us what is wrong and why we hurt and can not eat without pain.  Some of us have healed and moved on and are doing fine... I tend to think I am doing amazing from what I have gone thru.  I really am doing fine, but the recent weight and FAT loss tells me there is a malabsorpiton problem again and I do not think I want to be in the hospital for a drawn out period of time again.  I will miss my son and his family and especially my dog!  Romeo is a faithful part of my life and literally gets me out of bed in the morning.  He motivates me. I love my shihtzu....I wonder if there is a connection there with the spelling...hmmmm, but I do worry about what he will go thru if I am not here warming the house and he has to move to the basement suite for a while.  My poor puppy.  He has me so well trained.....  :(.

Oh well I got thur it the first time I will insist I rally and pull thru again.  In the mean time, encouragement is vital and so is the priority of going back to the doctor.  I think I just gave myself a pep talk!   I would like to know how many have trouble with keeping weight on?  Am I starting to get concerned too early?   Help.   I do not like what my gut is telling me.  Linda

Hi Linda

I have to say I hope for you that your gut is wrong this time n you don't have to go back in the hospital again . You are right we have all been through a lot and as you say gone deep n pulled it out of our and moved on and you sound pretty tuff n I am sure if need be you will do it again . And you n I seem to have a couple things in common on my first surgery it was the 6th day after n I thought I was going home when I felt a cool feeling on my belly . Well Doc came in n looked at it said its infected grabbed the nurse took out 19 staples n began to scrub out the infection ! Now I have always had a pretty good tolerance to pain but that was the worst pain I ever had no doubt ! So he did not send me home n that night I couldn't even sleep cause I thought he was gonna do it again the next day . But the next day he sent me home like you with a belly that was wide open where 19 stiches used to be to heal . 45 days of nurses coming it was closed enough for my wife to take care of it the rest of the way . I actually took day by day pictures of the healing process . Just saying I do understand some of what you are talking about . Now the second thing we have in common is our little family member we too have a Shih Tzu he's a little one 10lbs he is my buddy goes everywhere with us n yes he sleeps with us too . When I came home from the hospital I hide around the corner n surprised him we were both happy to see each other . Sometimes I feel funny telling people what kind of dog I have only because of how it sounds . Lol . He might be just a little bit spoiled and yes he too has us pretty well trained . :-) Sorry I get a bit long winded . Anyway hope you don't have to go to that H word (Hospital) place again .......

Eric, Would I ever get in the position as many here with "the stump" ??? I  have  my rectum, NO COLON.. All leaks from it stopped within 5-6 months- and really not a bother to me.. Maybe that is the fact that I have to rest so much? And that helped my healing of this? Sounds horrible!! I am doing rather well  now, just have to gain weight and get healthier.. My next step and hopefully the last step for me.. (?)  M.

Hey there Marcie, Robert and Z,  and Eric...have to give honerable mention thee right?! I sure appreciate you all like you can not believe.  Marcie,  I have a bit of an advantage here I guess.  Before I became a nurse,  I cooked in Restaurants, on the CN Train and at Trinity Western University when it was just a college. Before that my desire to cook came from working at a bible camp on Pender Island.  I did not know it then, but I was cooking along side my very future mother inlaw.  Because of my joy for cooking, I also cooked at Queens Park Hospital in New Westminster.  I do not think they are there anymore.  Loved it and sucked in everything I learned.  I found out I could really cook. So I applied some of this to my diet restrictions and allergies.  From there,  because like you Marcie, dehydration I think is a thing for most of us.  But I do get extroardinarily dry!  It is crazy.  I can wake up at night just reaching for my glass of H2O ( Water )  I have in my room a 900 ml bottle of water and am always filling it up.  I have noticed that there are times that even when I am thirsty, I need to restrict my intake of fluid,  Or, it rushes out as fast as I put it in.  Except when I eat.  But at times, I do have to really just take in only what I need  8 glasses, and not what I want.  I drink three large glasses of milk if not more a day. This is good for skin and tissue and does help when I have sores under my bag plate area. I never learned the right name for the pieces of it so I created my own.  Forgive me if it confuses you!  I see by your picture that you have a slight frame. I however am 5'6"  and as my father says am built like a brick outhouse.  I think this has helped me pull thru some of the desperate things I went thru.  Robert, your wife is beautiful!  Tell her!    My staples were removed while I was in bed two days after that surgery, and I had been to the washroom and found a trail of blood from the door to the throne.  I looked down and said to myself...oh dear, someone has a problem. Then I discovered it was me.  I was bleeding thru my staples.  The night before I was sound asleep, a rare thing for me in Hospital.  I woke at two a.m. with a horrid sharp pain that took my breath away and would not quit.  I grabbed blindly for the bell as I had a anesthetic hangover and when I found it grabbed onto it and never let go. Held it down so they could not shut it off.  I really never used the bell except for pain killers.  My goodlooking male nurse came running in and gently eased it from my hand and stayed with me while another nurse gave me a shot and then boom the pain was gone.   He stayed for a half hour talking sbout what the pain was like and where.  I do not know what they gave me but it was good.  It worked.  Right up until I went to the bathroom.  As I sat there I thought I had not come all that way from the window bed in the four bed room to not pee.  I finished peeing then put paper towels down on the blood to prevent a nurse running in from slipping on it.  It was a small washroom.  When I rang the bell...I was dizzy and felt so very exhausted. This was rather sudden.  I can be long winded also...but then I have rarely talked about these things to anyone. Not too many can relate or want to hear it.  This is new for me.  Anyways, from there they rushed out visitors as it was during visiting hours and guest had seen the blood trail from my bed to the can. Just great!!! Not.  Anyays I rang that bell and hung onto it too for dear life.  Pain was setting in.   Still on the toilet.  Somehow I was back in bed with the surgeon standing over me and he was also taking out staples and telling me I had to go back in to surgery.  Then my husband was there.  I have no idea where and how he got there that quick as we lived an hour away at the time.   It was all so very strange. I asked why housekeeping was in the room. Apparently I had made a mess.  In surgery it was lights out pretty quick.  Eight hours later I woke up hooked to a Vac-U-Pac.  My little buddy for 13  weeks.  It sucked more and more infection out of my tummy.  The bandages were changed every day for a while and then every second day at my bedside.  They figured the curtains kept the area sterile enough to change them there.  I could not move. I was beat.  But this left me with not just my Pic lines but also another IV pole for the  Vac-u-pac  and I still had the Banana bags hanging.   Marcie...22oo calories a day.  They told me I could not eat that much nutrition...nor could I afford it or cook it.   I did not eat in that stay for literally almost 11 months.  Never wanted to either.

Marcie what I do from home is eat good food calories.  I eat lots of cream soups, scalloped potatoes and I make meals in advance and freeze in ready to cook  throw away containers from the dollar store.  I eat strong colored vegies...beets, and the greens.  Grains...go right thru me so I only eat them very occationally.  I have a lot of pain digesting food so the softer meat is, the better for me, and it starts as I am eating.  I eat a lot of fish!  We have a fish bus that comes to town that is very good and we buy our seafood from there.  He is reasonable.  I love salmon, shrimp and lobster and crab, but can only afford the latter two   very occationally.  I only cook about four shrimp at a time...one for my Romeo...the dog.  He enjoys salmon with the best of us.  He always get about three bites of salmon.  I can not eat a lot in one sitting.  He is so loyal and loving and forgiving when I can not walk him  that he deserves treats.  I bake all of it and always have vegies  too with spuds or rice.  RICE...for me, I have to add about a 1/2 to 3/4 cup of H2O extra.  It means a softer rice but them it does not stop me up this way.  I stay away from breads as they bloat me like a helium balloon.  Rose speaks then like crazy.  She can be heard over the phone when I am on it.  So, I eat a lot of crackers and cheese too.  I love cheese and thank goodness I can eat it.  I have a very limited budget being a widow and all...so I waste very little and plan ahead all the time.  It is one of my survival methods...plan a meal or make several and feeze for when I am too tired to even get off the bed.  I have made my room my sanctuary.  I have a king sized crocheted blanket I am making for my son.  My cross- stitch is handy and being a big room it is neat and organized well.  I love to read.  With fluids by my side I can spend hours in here...plus my son set me up with a big TV in here also...obviously my computer is in here too.  This way the rest of the house stays clean and tidy and Romeo and I spend a fair bit of time in here.  I feed the birds and love to watch them come and go.  They are right ouside my back window here.  This allows me the freedom to work on something and not feel stressed  if someone knocks on the door.  This summer was awesome for me.  Because I also garden,  out my back window here,  there is a four tiered step garden.  I can watch my zuchinni grow.  This is a great neighborhood as I know all my neighbors and enjoy visiting with them in fair whether...so does Romeo.  They often invite us in and  I do them also.  Winter we all tend to hunker down and hibernate to some degree but make up for it in spring, summer and fall.  So it took a while to figure out where I wanted to spend my awake time but once I set it up and with the blessing of those close to me...I am very comfortable.  I do all my own housecleaning except for vacuuming here and there.  Daniel helps me with a major vacuum job.  Lifting and moving furniture.  He is great son with a bi strong uscular body.  I am allergic to dust so I have to dust once a week whether I like it or not and I vacuum once a week also.  I break my day up for vacuuming as my incisions have been nasty to my tummy muscles.  I have the great divide...this is the muscle from just under the V in my rib cage to the top of my pubic bone, where they have gone in so many times for surgery.  Gone in and never pulled it closed. My scar is somewhat wide from the open healing surgery.  And yes, they did put my bellybutton back where it belonged last time. I am rather partial to my belly button!  It is a source of being normal for me.  Crazy I know.  But I am attached to the thing.   I open my window for a few hours daily to get the air exchanged and I think Romeo enjoys it too.

Robert,  Romeo is about 16 pounds and has beautiful markings.  I have had three dogs, either a mix or brand name.  Blessed to have had them for free so just vet bills.  When I have to say his make,  I leave out the T verbally.  It embarrases me.   And I always laugh when I say it...shame, I know!  He too sleeps  on the bed with me and he is always all over it.  He snuggles at night and I love that.  I miss my hairy husband!  Romeo is a great little friend and I love his 8 1/2 year old antics.  He likes to murder and remurder his squeeky cow and has sucked  the face off of his floppy dog several times over.  I mend it because he is partial to black and white...go fgure!

Marcie, eating is something I take seriously.  I am about the same weight and having the fat fall off of me the way it is doing right now does scare me.  I would not be taking my computer to the hospital with me and only have a flip cell phone with a call only feature on it.  My choice.  I have a heart condition also. I hav asked God for arefund on this body, but I gather he thinks it is fearfully and wonderfully made...I tend to agree.  I Have had a catheter ablation on the SV node to knock it down to half size.  The morning they did the  surgery, I was awake for it.  My idea.  Dumb idea.  But it was worth it.   It took them five hours to get into my heart and I had to lay still the whole time.  The anesthiesiologyst started throwing up just before they put me under.  I said try it anyway and lets see what I can handle.  I only nearly passed out once while they introduced electricity into my heart to  do the ablation.  It was like cauterizing my pace make...the one God gave me.  They said I had survived foru medially induced heart attacks that day.  Now I have more SVT.   Speaking of God.  I rely on him heavily.  I was raised baptist.  I go to church  through the TV sunday mornings with Dr. Charles Stanley.  Joy TV.   He is a very good pastor of them all on TV.  I get encouraged listening to him and his In Touch Ministry program.  I long to take the Alaska cruise with them one summer.   He teaches staight from the bible, not like some,  off the top of there head.

Anyways,  I could bore you with Romeo stories as he is a very vocal and interesting little guy. I am not computer savey at all.  I fumble thru it but will see if I can post a pic. of him and me sometime. I need my son to do this for me.  It is a miracle I can even get to this site.  Anyways, I hope you all are well today and having a good Sunday.  Again we take one day at a time right.

All the best....Linda

Linda, 2200 calories a day? Don't understand.. to much for me or to little?

I eat like u do also ECEPT the fish ecky !!  But I like baked stuffed shrimp-which is a treat as it is so full of butter, garlic-- and that is the way I like it.. Once a year for me.. :-) I can have grains, etc. I gained another pound today 119 :-) sure don't know what's going on-but maybe it is the fact that I saw a upper GI diet specialist.??? I called in the big guns for nothing huh? Maybe I am turning the corner?  About time.. The fluids do concern me tho--  Also my Magizum has been up for the past 3 weeks.. 1.7-1.8-1.7.. So I have not received this extra med. of 2 bags-maybe it is the wine  :-)  I get blood work every week. If I can pull this Mag thing off for another 4 weeks, I will be happy-- it is the wine. hey!! different strokes for different folks right?

My dehydration? I get 12-14 pounds per week Via: power port inserted into my left side chest into main heart valve. (my third port) I like the power port best.. I hope to stop maybe this week of going for fluids 3 x/wk to 2 x/wk.  Holiday tomorrow, so I have to go Tues, Wed. and Fridays.  If I feel well enough tomorrow and Tuesday- I may skip Wednesday--Hopefully  no kidney failures.. But time to find out before the nice weather comes..  No hospital during that time.. :-)

You mentioned areas of Ct. I believe -- true?  Where do u live now?

I also have my bedroom the master bedroom and master bath to  myself... Love it.. Spent much time decorating it and have lots of windows to keep me COLD!!  After I came home from 6 months 3 1/2 years ago, Tom moved in the guest room.. I could not sleep on a regular basis..(and cried lots) And sleep was important to and for me to get well-As for Tom, his sleep .. But he can always hear me if needed. And the happy moments of the leaks at night-who wants to get shoved out of bed for the total make over?? I keep those special moments to myself to enjoy.  I never say an angry word.. just get up and take care of it.. I just say ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!" and toddle off to do my thing. And litterly move the cat who doesn't want to be  moved.

I love to cook also--That special GI diet thing? wants me on a diet for 2 weeks.. To see if I am allergic to milk--I am not--I had 2 very long hours of breathing tests done 2 years ago--But with this weight gain, I may put it off.

I do all my own house work also- Good exercise and I see a positive result.. good for the mind.. When I was sick I had a house cleaner come for 2 years she cost us $35.00/per/hr.  !! Due to the fact that NO ONE even pulled my bed spread over my sheets for 6 months-- !!HEllooooo??? And I had to sleep on dust.. I needed someone..!!!  (I was taken away by ambulance and out of it and comma for 2 months etc. read me.. ) Never mind the fact that my feet were sticking to the kitchen floor as I walked through there to my bedroom.. :-( Men!! But,  my husband of 47 years went through so much of not knowing if I would live or not during this time.. So, I guess I said GUESS cleaning was not on his mind.. Just him and the cat--Mr. Poo.

Ya, I have to follow my son around to take pictures so I can sent them-but I don't know  how to get them on this blog.. So, I am in your corner of the "computer of errors.... "

Sorry that u had such a long time with your scarings of healing.  I have read much of this on this blog.. IF I eat to much at one time, I feel streched out and hurts.  So nature is talking to  me.. Eat the rest later......... I  had my staples in for just over a week.  Then I had to have 5 huge meat hooks taken out from my tummy 4 weeks later.. They let Tom take me out and to the Dr. for this.. During this I was at a nursing home learning how to walk-not an easy task with those hooks In and being so weak.. My legs were rubber..  But I did it!!! I still  only remember that I went down in another house I lived in. Not this house.. totally off and still am.. I went down in a house of 25 years ago-- Odd huh? When Tom took me home, I said this is NOT our house!! But when I saw the inside and my furniture, that I remembered.. Took me awhile to recognize this house coming home for a year.. I guess this is where I live.  ????

Get well. Marcie..

Linda, keep the faith. Prayer works. No difference if you're Muslim,  Jewish or Christian,  prayer works.

So very TRUE My "Z" :-)

I was just outside and saw a falling star..  I made a wish:

For all of us that are well, may we stay this way.

For all of those that are ill, get well and stay that way. Amen!

Robert, you know where I was and doing huh? :-(
