My Wife has a friend who has been having tummy and bowel problems for a while, tests this week has confirmed it as crohns. The girl is early 30s with a young family into fitness and would be a careful to eat healthy. Makes you wonder why this is becoming so common!! As so many of us do she has already started to take every supplement, potion and remedy we all know the type of thing to help. she knows I am an ostomate and will always be here to offer any help I can but I am aware that at this early stage the last thing she wants is some one else weighing in with advice. Any advice how to be a supportive friend without over doing it?

first, She knows who and what you are.  A good friend.  Remain that way.

Second, give her this blog.  Add let her educate herself slowly. If she needs you she will let you know.

Third, She is lucky to have you as a friend on the sidelines when needed.

My advice is not to offer advice - unless you're asked.

As someone who's newly diagnosed, no doubt she will be overloaded with information, promises for quick relief, diet advice, etc. Most of what she comes across will not be helpful and may be harmful.

If she's in the UK, you can point her to the people at Crohn's and Colitis UK. The most important thing for her is to get onto doctor recommended treatments early on - this could spare her from future surgeries and unnecessary suffering.

If she'd like to connect with someone, there are many IBD advocates who can offer her both support and direction!

Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate.

Hi Eric, that has been the thought in the back of my mind, I know from my own experience to much advice from the wrong source is more harmful than helpful. Here in N.I for a small country we have 2 outstanding hospitals in Belfast. Many thanks!
