I am 14 months since having a Colostomy. Can I have Cheerios with low fat milk?

Hi Jillian, Am happy to tell you YES🤗

I ain’t found any trouble with any cereal even muesli!! As with any new food just try a little to test.

Serving suggestion! Try out any of the nut milks on your cereal of choice. Well chilled delicious 😋

Hey there Jillian. . . John knows his business!! He just won't fly out here & install my toilet hose!!! Lol.

How are you doing with all foods?  I know it can be tricky sometimes  We like to tell people to take everything in moderation & increase slowly untill your sure what your guts are doing .  Def. go slow but theres a whole world of food ahead of you.  Watery fruits are great on top of or mixed in with a thicker food like granolla... just for careful back up! Lol!

I hope all goes well with a new try!

Linda

@dlkfiretruck Thanks for responding Linda! Appreciate it! I have learned so much from the Vegan Ostamy Site. I am just now feeling confident enough to branch out and try some of the foods I enjoyed before the Colostomy. But will approach carefully and see what happens....

Cheerios are very easy to digest, so this should be a very safe food.

The only cereal to be cautious of when trying it for the first time are the whole grain types with actual dry fruit or nuts, but even then, they should be safe for most. 👌

For some reason kids cereals are easier on my digestion. I guess anything high fiber messes me up.

On occasion, I've used powdered baby cereal, which is very easy to digest. If I were having trouble digesting, or need to be on a special diet for whatever reason, I'd probably go with more of that :)

@veganostomy same here like gerber  rice baby cereal. With regular cereal I get problems with too much fiber. I can eat fruit loops, fruity pebbles etc. Corn Pops, Rice Krispies  with better luck. Oh and if I want a huge clean out it’s oatmeal. I have blown bags at work from oatmeal.

Oh dear, oatmeal is my favourite breakfast. Has been for many years!! Hope I can keep eating it after surgery.

So for you it comes in handy if you need a cleanout, right?

The dietician said that from a few weeks after surgery, I can eat anything I'm used to now.

Incontinent in a better way, since 12 July 2023

I eat oatmeal on a regular basis without issues. Overnight oats, quick oats, and even steel cut (these are the hardest to digest unless cooked really well).

I suspect that if oatmeal is OK for you now (i.e. doesn't cause any strange laxative effect or gas), then I see no reason why it would be a problem after surgery. You might even prefer to use it if your output is loose/liquid, since it can help to solidify things.
